Tax Manager

Mid-levelManager
London, 🇬🇧 United Kingdom
Finance

Hello, we’re Starling. We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way. We’re a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company. We’re a bank, but better: fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone. We employ more than 3,000 people across our London, Southampton, Cardiff and Manchester offices.

We are looking for a Tax Manager to join our growing tax team. Alongside the Senior Tax Managers, Head of Tax and the finance, payroll and HR teams, you will assist with the group’s UK and international corporation tax, indirect tax and employment tax affairs. This will include supporting a wide range of tax projects and managing tax compliance and tax risk.

This is an exciting time to be joining Starling Bank given its growth trajectory to date and its ambitious expansion plans in both the UK and internationally. You will support these plans from a tax perspective.

  • Assist in managing the Group’s UK and international corporation tax compliance including quarterly tax provisions, corporation tax returns/payments, transfer pricing models and R&D expenditure credit claims.

  • Support the organisation and wider tax team by taking a leading role in tax risk management and governance.

  • Assist with employment tax issues across the group including annual compliance (PSA, P11Ds etc), establishing local country payrolls for overseas employees and tax implications for internationally mobile employees.

  • Support with tax reporting such as FATCA and CRS returns, BBSI returns and CT61 returns.

  • Liaison between the finance and tax/payroll teams, as required across the taxes

  • You may also be involved and assist where required in a wide range of strategic tax advisory projects such as international expansion, tax structuring and IPO planning.

  • You may also support the group’s indirect tax compliance both in the UK and internationally.

  • Your role will likely include assisting with internal ad hoc tax advice across the business including preparation of internal memos and training material.

Requirements

  • A strong tax and finance background, gained in practice and/or industry.
  • Experience of international taxes would be an advantage.
  • Indirect tax and employment tax experience is desirable, but not essential.
  • Enthusiasm and a drive to expand your knowledge in new areas is as important as experience.
  • Professional Qualification desirable but not essential: ACA, ACCA, CTA or part qualified, with accounting knowledge.
  • A self-starter and independent worker with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Well organised with the ability to plan and deliver on tight deadlines with attention to detail.
  • A practical and commercial approach to problem solving, and the ability to communicate complex tax matters to both a tax and non-tax audience.

Benefits

  • 25 days holiday (plus take your public holiday allowance whenever works best for you)
  • An extra day’s holiday for your birthday
  • Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
  • Generous family-friendly policies
  • Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks
  • Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work and Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships
