About the Department

Are you a seasoned web developer with a passion for using cutting-edge technologies to tackle global challenges? The University of Chicago (UC) is seeking a talented individual to join our research team in the development of a knowledge base for the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovation (CEPI) Disease X program, aimed at preventing the next pandemic.
Led by Professor Rick Stevens from the Department of Computer Science, our project focuses on constructing a comprehensive knowledge base of data and AI models crucial for vaccine development against emerging viruses. Researchers with diverse backgrounds from UChicago and Argonne National Laboratory will be partnering with cross-institution collaborators at Houston Methodist, UT Austin, UTMB, JCVI, and LJI.

Job Summary

The job works independently to perform a variety of activities relating to software support and/or development. Analyzes, designs, develops, debugs, and modifies computer code for end user applications, beta general releases, and production support. Guides development and implementation of applications, web pages, and user-interfaces using a variety of software applications, techniques, and tools. Solves complex problems in administration, maintenance, integration, and troubleshooting of code and application ecosystem currently in production.

Responsibilities

  • Play a pivotal role in designing and implementing user-friendly web interfaces to access and interact with the data in the knowledge base.

  • Developing responsive and intuitive web applications using the latest technologies, including React JS.

  • Collaborating with our team and providing leadership to integrate front-end interfaces with back-end databases and AI models.

  • Implementing data visualization tools to present complex scientific information in a clear and engaging manner.

  • Ensuring the security, scalability, and performance of web applications through best practices and optimization techniques.

  • Staying updated on the latest trends and technologies in web development and providing guidance on their implementation within the project.

  • Designs new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met.

  • Acts as a technical consultant and resource for faculty research, teaching, and/or administrative projects.

  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelorโ€™s or masterโ€™s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field.

Experience:

  • Experience with JavaScript based visualization frameworks, such as D3, cytoscape, or dojo.gfx.
  • Experience working with RESTful APIs and asynchronous JavaScript.
  • Experience with production deployment of the applications and infrastructure in proxied/firewalled environments.
  • Experience with scripting languages, such as Python or Perl.
  • Experience with search platforms, such as Apache Solr.
  • Experience with developing user interfaces for bioinformatics or biomedical projects is a plus.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

  • Proficiency in front-end technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, with experience in React JS.
  • Strong understanding of web design principles and user experience best practices.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
  • Proficiency working in a Unix system environment.

Preferred Competencies

  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
