The College of Engineering and Science (COES) seeks a Director of Strategic Communications. The director will be responsible for elevating the profile and influence of COES through strategic communication, media relations, and brand management. They will develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies to amplify the mission of COES, managing a team of communication professionals, and overseeing the integration of innovative public relations techniques to engage new audiences and support organizational growth. The Director of Communications will develop strategic plans for the college’s communication and amplification objectives, collaborate with the dean and college leadership team on evolving programs, and oversee the expansion of the college’s presence across social media and global stages.

Job Duties

  • Manage and create content for college communications, including press releases, social media, website activities, periodic reports and newsletters, and other strategic communications

  • In collaboration with the dean and program leads, develop, and implement a comprehensive communications and external affairs strategy, including defining short- and long-term goals and objectives to advance the college’s mission and broaden awareness of its programs, focusing on alumni, stakeholders, prospective students, and untapped potential audiences

  • Spearhead strategic initiatives to identify and engage untapped audiences, leveraging data-driven insights and innovative approaches

  • Working with the Director of Development, create and execute amplification campaigns, donor engagement strategies, and public events through the engagement of external partners and consultants

  • Organize and promote high-profile PR events and ensure the timely execution of all communications activities

  • Collaborate with leadership to promote positive internal communications that keep all staff members up-to-date and promote an integrated and collaborative environment

  • Manage the college’s social media strategy, driving audience growth and engagement, with a focus on increasing distribution channels and media contacts

  • Ensure consistency and impact in messaging across all digital content platforms

  • Lead media relations efforts, serving as the primary contact for media inquiries and managing publicity campaigns

  • Help to define strategies on college and programmatic website development

  • Oversee and collaborate with staff and student worker efforts to enhance communications

  • Collaborate with University Communications, adhere to their standards, and work within the strategic framework of the University

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or a related field with five or more years of combined experience in communications, marketing, and/or public relations

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to write for a variety of audiences and channels with strong editing skills

  • Ability to work as part of a team, along with leading and directing others

  • Be adaptable to different challenges that arise and finding creative solutions

  • A successful track record in setting priorities and meeting deadlines

  • Strong organization and problem-solving skills

  • An eye for design to effectively communicate vision
