Join our dynamic Nature team as an Ecologist (all levels) in our growing Cambridge, Croydon, Leeds, Basingstoke, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham or Nottingham offices (though other locations may be considered), as well as taking advantage of our flexible hybrid working model. At AECOM, we’re at the forefront of innovation, delivering an exceptional portfolio of Ecology programs and projects through long-term partnerships with key clients. Presently, our Nature teams are working on a new electrical transmission line for National Grid (facilitating the connection of proposed new offshore wind), rail projects including the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), nationally significant blue and green hydrogen production facilities, several of the largest solar farms to have gained consent in the UK; a cable tunnel below the River Thames; electricity network upgrades in Kent and Suffolk

In this role, depending on your interests and skillset, you will have opportunities to support on a variety of areas such as: using innovative techniques for species and habitats surveys, work winning and Biodiversity Net Gain mentoring. Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Support liaison with project managers and clients on the delivery of ecological requirements within multi-disciplinary tenders and projects;
  • Organise and carry out desk studies and field-based habitat, botanical, and protected species surveys;
  • Assisting, as appropriate to grade, with managing the technical and financial performance of ecological projects to meet budgets and deadlines;
  • Support with undertaking the analysis, evaluation, interpretation and presentation of ecological data, including preparing reports and supporting with the design of mitigation strategies;
  • Performing the role of an Ecological Clerk of Works on construction projects;
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with your line manager, other members of the ecology team and clients;
  • Compliance with internal business management procedures, including in relation to health and safety and technical quality of all advice and outputs including self-check of work; and

Requirements

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible?

Here's what we're looking for:

  • Experience of working in an ecology-related job role in the public and / or private sector, and designing, coordinating/ leading field surveys
  • Developing knowledge of UK and EC wildlife legislation and policy, particularly relevant to Wales, and the Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) process;
  • Experience in botanical identification, undertaking Phase 1 Habitat / NVC surveys and/or protected species surveys, preferably bats or dormouse;
  • Adaptable and flexible approach to work to meet peaks in demands (ecology roles typically involve occasional longer/and or unsociable hours and a degree of working away from home for days/ weeks at a time); and
  • Strong report writing skills, with demonstrable experience in producing a range of reports and providing ecological advice to clients and stakeholders.
