Berry Street is a business-in-a-box platform enabling registered dietitians to start and scale private practices that accept health insurance. We provide all of the software needed to run a thriving practice + administrative services like insurance contracting, eligibility verification, customer support, claims billing, and even patient acquisition.

The Opportunity:

Americans' poor nutrition is killing us (and costing us billions).

  • 3/4 are overweight
  • 1/2 are obese
  • 1/2 have 1+ chronic disease caused by poor nutrition
  • 1 in 10 will have an eating disorder in their lifetime (binge eating, anorexia, bulimia, etc.)

Nutrition therapy is both clinically proven to make a difference and most commercial health insurance plans cover it at $0 out-of-pocket.

We’re on a mission to fundamentally heal America’s relationship with food. Berry Street empowers registered dietitians to launch and grow in-network private practices. We’re creating game-changing technology to build America’s largest dietitian network and ensure that anyone can access the help they need.

Since launching in January 2023, Berry Street has raised capital from top VCs like Northzone, Village Global, and angel investors like the founders of Spring Health, Grow Therapy, and Tilly.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and driven Head of Engineering to join our team at Berry Street. As the Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for leading our talented engineering team and driving the technical vision and strategy of our platform. You will work closely with the founders and senior leadership to ensure the successful delivery and continued growth of our product.

Responsibilities:

  • Build a high-performance culture that rewards results, and is optimized for retention and productivity.
  • Articulate a technology strategy that allows engineers to make great decisions and balance paying down tech debt, building for scale, and shipping new functionality.
  • Evolve our architecture, creating services that can be owned and managed end-to-end.
  • Ensure our internal engineering practices (e.g. CI/CD, code reviews, QA technology, etc) are appropriate for our scale, and maximizing our productivity.
  • Serve as a player-coach, leading by example through both strategic management and hands-on technical contributions to our codebase.
  • Grow the team; optimize our recruiting process and hire across all backgrounds, all levels of seniority & specialist technical domains.
  • Manage at scale; bring to bear the right balance of process and flexibility; measure what matters and drive improvements in quality, velocity, and impact.
  • Own the engineering infrastructure and SaaS budget. Continue building our techops competency for efficiency, reliability, scale, and security.
  • You will partner with peer department heads to create the technical roadmap and headcount plan that accelerate the business.
  • As an executive in the company, you will be part of the Senior Leadership Team and form strong relationships with the C-suite and VPs.
  • Maintain high-velocity iteration in the face of increasing scale and complexity.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, including 3+ years of recruiting and managing a team of multiple senior engineers preferred. You’ve built and scaled systems, made complex engineering decisions, and have proven out your technical skills in the industry (Bonus: if you’ve scaled engineering in the digital health or consumer marketplace space).
  • Prior experience in a leadership role, managing and growing a team of engineers
  • You have experience working with REST APIs, web frameworks, relational databases like postgreSQL, an understanding of HTML, CSS, strong Javascript skills and at least one backend language.
  • Entrepreneurial spirit. You have worked in a startup or on your own side projects and built products from the ground up.
  • Product thinker. You want to build through a user-centric lens and be involved not only in engineering decisions but product and design decisions as well.
  • Leader. You’ll do anything to achieve your goal. You know how to think on the fly and persist through setbacks and roadblocks and to motivate your teammates to do the same.
  • Team Player. You are collaborative by nature, relish in camaraderie and group wins, and are looked to by colleagues as a steadfast partner and source of encouragement
  • Highly Motivated. You want ownership of your work.
