Sr Director of Mechanical Engineering

Atomic Machines is on Earth to radically advance humanity’s command over matter. Our mission is real-time bits-to-atoms manufacturing of anything at any scale, and to that end, we’re developing an entirely new digital micro-device manufacturing platform that is going to redefine how things are made, and do so while simultaneously enabling the rapid creation at any scale of new classes of machines – think medical micro-robotics, true lab-on-chip microfluidics, tunable antennas, ultrafast high-power and high-frequency RF switching devices and many more. The first device we are building with our platform has exceptional large-scale product/market fit and commercial traction, and we are pushing hard to share it with the world.

What You'll Need:

• Substantial experience as a hands-on mechanical engineer, designing and building complex dynamic systems, with a strong preference for experience with precision systems.

• Several years of experience managing mechanical engineering teams in a multidisciplinary environment, including performance management, compensation, scope of work, and oversight.

• Experience recruiting and hiring exceptional and very senior (principal-/lead-level) engineers.

• Experience with translating company goals to team-level goals, establishing hiring plans, and building roadmaps to achieve the goals.

• Demonstrated success in leading a team of engineers through the development of a complex and respectable product and bringing it to market.

• Excellent communicator - articulate, concise/crisp, high signal-to-noise ratio.

• High EQ / strong in working with and motivating people.

• Must be a strong culture fit - we will not compromise on this.

• Intellectually honest and highly trustworthy.

• At least a B.S. in mechanical engineering from a reputable university.

What You'll Do:

• Manage, build, and maintain a high-judgment org chart with clear hiring targets based on company goals and technology roadmap.
• Play an active role in engineer recruiting to hit hiring goals with bar-raising talent.
• Deeply understand technical aspects of our platform and MEMS devices.
• Work cross-functionally to develop and evolve system architecture and technology strategy (e.g. modularity, zero-tooling, component reuse).
• Manage the Mechanical Engineering leaders focused on AMP functionality.
• Conduct 1:1s and team meetings to keep everyone aligned and apprised of important company information, goals, issues, etc.
• Work with the team to establish and then uphold key practices, e.g. design reviews, sprint work, engineering standards.
• Set goals and R&D direction for the team, review technical work, and help solve difficult technical problems.
• Performance manage your team through providing constructive performance feedback aligned with cultural values and company goals, work with reports to establish growth goals, maintain high performance standard across the team, and regularly review engineering progress and problem solve as needed to remove obstacles and accelerate work.
• Build / manage / own the relevant development schedule and capabilities.
• Work with the AMP team and others as needed to create robust development plans in the context of company business goals and technology strategy and architecture.
• Ensure the PDP is used effectively in all development activities.
• Represent the AMP team in broader company planning to set and align milestones.
• Work with TPM to align / integrate company roadmap with AMP roadmap.
• Work with TPM and leadership team to align on business and technology strategy, economic targets and objectives.

$220,000 - $280,000 a year

The compensation for this position also includes equity and benefits.
