As Lead Network Performance Engineer within Network Planning and Regulation, you will play a pivotal role in conducting specialist power system studies and analysis to assess various aspects of existing and emerging network operability risks, including risks posed by new technologies and wider changes in the electricity network. You will help to ensure that new equipment connected to the network is integrated efficiently and in a manner that minimises wider network operability risks.

What you’ll be doing

As a Lead Network Performance Engineer, you will:

  • Analyse existing and emerging network operability and stability risks related to e.g. reducing system strength, harmonics, sub-synchronous oscillation and interaction, wider interaction between connected plant and the response of the network to disturbances, to ensure that the network continues to perform within license requirements.
  • Identify, design, develop solutions/mitigation to manage and minimise operational/operability risks or network performance problems.
  • Develop, implement and maintain processes, policies and standards to manage network operability risks.
  • Monitor the performance of the network to identify and manage emerging risks/issues.
  • Assist with the successful connection and integration of equipment that may pose a wider operability risk, such as HVDC links, static and dynamic reactive compensation equipment, by providing project support during the design, specification, tendering and delivery of such projects.
  • Support other teams in Transmission and Engineering Design on operability and interaction issues.
  • Work with academic institutions, industry bodies/forums, Ofgem, the ESO, other TOs and stakeholders with the aim of understanding and minimising network risks.

What you’ll bring

  • A degree in Electrical Engineering with a higher degree in a relevant subject area and/or relevant industrial design experience.

  • Experience in power systems, power system analysis and design.

  • A good understanding of the response of power systems to disturbances and interaction mechanisms such as SSTI, control system interactions or other resonant conditions.

  • Experience in the design, development or delivery of transmission network projects.

  • Working knowledge of the GB SQSS, Grid Code and STC.

  • Good communication skills with the ability to write clear reports and present complex technical matters to a non-technical audience.

  • Chartered membership of the IET or working towards this.

  • Knowledge of the regulatory environment.
