Position Summary:

As a member of the Engineering - Hardware team, the Mechanical Engineer II is responsible for providing design, implementation, testing, and production of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems for consumer and commercial robotic products. This is a hands-on role that involves working on mechanical design and product development activities from concept through production.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Develop innovative designs to meet all requirements for performance, reliability, total cost of ownership, serviceability, and manufacturability
  • Lead design visualization efforts with 3D CAD models to explore multiple design options
  • Realize industrial design concept sketches into functional and manufacturable designs
  • Design of plastic and metal mechanical components, mechanisms, and assemblies
  • Design of user interface and electrical enclosures
  • Detailed mechanical design using CAD tools (SolidWorks, Creo/Pro-E, etc.)
  • Create engineering packages including BOM, assembly trees, parts list, etc
  • Release and control engineering documentation using ECO processes
  • Leverage laboratory testing and field-test data to understand and manage design trade-offs
  • Hold mechanical technical design reviews, risk assessments, FMEA, FEA, Reliability testing, etc
  • Define qualification, acceptance, and functional testing requirements for mechanical systems

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field
  • Professional Engineer Certification or the qualifications and ability to obtain the Professional Engineer Certification
  • 3 - 5 years of related work experience
  • Experience with, and ability to take design ownership, of mechanical design and product development activities and process from concept through production
  • Experience designing with different plastic forming processes like rotational molding, injection molding, extrusions, vacuum forming, and thermoforming
  • Experience designing with different metal fabrications processes like sheet metal forming, machining, extrusions, castings, and weldments

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of mechanical design of electronics PCB, module packaging and cabling desired
  • Familiar with working with various agency standards like IEC, UL, ETL, CE, ANSI, MIL and NEMA, etc
  • Experience in mobile robotics or industrial automation
  • Proficiency using CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Experience with SolidWorks or Pro-E
  • Experience with FEA/CFD tools like ANSYS, COMSOL, ABAQUS, etc
  • Experience desired dealing with various thermal, shock, vibration, and ingress protection techniques and able to apply them to electronics modules and enclosure packaging
  • Experience with GD&T standards
  • Familiarity with hand tools
  • Familiarity with basic command line operation in Linux environment
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping and 3D printing

Work Environment:

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. Employees are exposed to the typical office environment with computers, printers and telephones.

Salary Range:

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in San Diego, California is $97,335 to $118,965. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc. Brain Corp is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
