Principal Business Systems Analysts are a primary interface between technology teams and business partners. They are responsible for understanding current and future processes, and where applicable, including processes for the entire enterprise. They take full responsibility for gathering and documenting business needs and requirements, and manage the design and execution of business process tests. They assist with generating project business cases and provide guidance to stakeholders on devising effective and efficient approaches to achieve the desired business outcomes.

The Principal Business Systems Analyst role is part of Markel’s Global Financial Systems Support team, which is responsible for developing and maintaining Markel’s global financial applications in a Scaled Agile environment. This includes the Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) cloud services suite, as well as other Accounting, Finance, Treasury and Disbursement applications. This role requires solid time management and organizational skills, the ability to work independently, and collaborate with and influence multiple stakeholders across IT and Finance. Interactions with senior management in support of technical and business outcomes are commonplace. The Principal Business Systems Analyst will need to leverage business and technical expertise, as well as adaptability, to be successful in this role.

The primary function of this position is to partner with our finance product owners to create and refine features and stories, and to lead in the delivery of iteration goals. Significant interaction will be necessary with internal business customers in the US, Bermuda, and UK. This individual will work closely with architects, other business systems analysts and technical teams, software vendors, project managers, and third parties. Additional accountabilities include system analysis and testing, SOX and security auditing, implementation of IT governance policies, support for service requests and incidents, and execution of system functions to complete monthly financial cycles.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Model the principles and behaviors tied to Agile delivery and focusing on achieving customer value.
  • Participate in PI Planning and create Team PI objectives
  • Develop and commit to Iteration goals based on team velocity and story estimation
  • Drive technical designs, architectural maturity, and operational business solutions
  • Conduct research, design, prototype and other exploration activities
  • Coordinate dependencies across multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Support the development and maintenance of road maps and the synchronization of cross-functional projects
  • Continuously improve the team’s process and performance
  • Provide support of Markel’s Oracle ERP, EPM core financial cloud services, other financial SaaS, and commercial off the shelf (COTS) applications by:
  • Acting as liaison between the Accounting and Finance units and technology teams to help resolve support issues in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of system configurations and functionalities
  • Respond to user requests and confirm resolution with originating user in a timely manner.
  • Complete approved configuration changes and confirm resolution with originating user.
  • Provide on-call support for your respective areas of responsibility in off hours including nights, weekends, and holidays according to the schedule provided by your manager.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to negotiate requirements and drive tradeoffs discussions to optimize across usability, cost and performance.
  • Facilitate strategic discussions with business partners in light of changing business environment, software needs & / or regulatory environments. Responsible for follow up and coordination within the team & across the broader IT organization.
  • Develop and maintain system, application and process artifacts and diagrams
  • Support product regression testing, coordinate deployments and perform validation activities
  • Participates in and conduct end user training, including development of user guides and reference materials
  • Serve as the Financial System owner as assigned:
  • Serve as liaison and voice of the customer to leverage avenues for product opportunities
  • Work with stakeholders to inform of the product’s purpose and solution objectives
  • Inform stakeholders of product activities and solicit ideas and assess opportunities to leverage new solutions and existing features
  • Provide feedback and guidance to product support and development teams for new or changing requirements
  • Understand stakeholder service expectations to establish and drive product performance metrics

Qualifications and Experiences

  • College degree in Accounting, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related work experience.
  • Extensive experience in managing, implementing or supporting Oracle Financial Cloud Applications (ERP Fusion R2R/ FCCS, P2P modules) or Oracle eBusiness Suite
  • 8-12 years’ work experience in Oracle Financials Cloud (or Oracle EBS) - full life cycle ERP Implementation experience preferred
  • Knowledge of the GL, FA, AP, Procurement, Contracts, Cash Management & Expense modules. Hands on experience in configuring and troubleshooting Oracle Financials Cloud Applications (or Oracle EBS) required.
  • Experience in building and supporting Oracle Integrations, Oracle Reporting Tools (Oracle Fusion Data Intelligence (FDI), BI Publisher, Financial Reporting Studio, SmartView, and OTBI), Oracle Integration Cloud (OIC), Oracle Security and Oracle BPM Workflows.
  • Experience in Oracle Financial Consolidation and Close Cloud (FCCS), Oracle Data Management Cloud (EDMCS), Oracle Enterprise Planning & Budgeting Cloud (EPBCS), Anaplan Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) experience would be a plus.
  • Foundational knowledge of Financial Accounting and Financial Reporting.
  • Knowledge/previous experience in the insurance industry would be a plus
  • Experience in working with business subject matter experts and technical teams to develop / scope functional requirements, conduct FIT-GAP Analysis, develop detail functional specifications, review technical specifications, prepare use case scenarios / test scripts, execute functional testing, and prepare cut-over plans.
  • Hands on experience in solution design using Oracle Financial ERP; Ability to work with business to develop solutions for complex business problems; Experience in serving as the liaison between business and technical team.
  • Ability to guide and coach technical teammates on functional aspects and assess development to ensure consistency with initial design.
  • Strong skill and ability to troubleshoot issues quickly and solve them, independently, in a timely manner.
  • Experience working with and using Agile/Scrum methodology with active participation in Agile ceremonies. Certification from Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) or Scrum Alliance is preferred but not required
  • Ability to multi-task, working on more than one issue simultaneously with a high degree of independence
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in addition to organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to communicate highly technical information in a manner that the business-friendly manner
  • Ability to partner with the business community
  • Strategic, conceptual, and analytical thinking and decision-making skills
  • Negotiating skills within a context of political sensitivity and conflicting interests
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite of Products - Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint, SharePoint Education
  • Experience working with and using Agile/Scrum methodology with active participation in Agile ceremonies. Certification from Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) or Scrum Alliance preferred but not required

The base salary offered for the successful candidate will be based on compensable factors such as job-relevant education, job-relevant experience, training, licensure, demonstrated competencies, geographic location, and other factors. The salary for the position is $100K - $125K with a 35% bonus potential.
