Digital transformation is changing the way factory, process and building automation systems are architected. Analog Devices has been investing in communications, software configurable analog, microcontrollers and security products to speed up this transition.

The Industrial Automation team is seeking a motivated, experienced System Applications engineer to drive technical engagements with industrial automation customers, developing reference designs, proof of concepts and other collateral to advance customer design ins. The Industrial Automation System application engineer uses their expertise in automation systems to develop system level solutions incorporating a mix of precision analog, mixed signal, digital, security, software and AI tailored to Analog Devices’ broad range of industrial customers.

ADI’s unique portfolio of industrial solutions is in prime position to capitalize on the digital transformation underway within factories, buildings, and other infrastructure. As a result, we are looking for an energetic and motivated systems applications engineer with strong vision and technical acumen to drive this initiative forward. The role is with a fast paced and dynamic team where innovation is nurtured. The variety and scope of projects provides an interesting and challenging opportunity for an impactful individual.

This position will be based in the US, with global travel required.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Interact with customers to determine their system requirements, current approach, and challenges. In the absence of direct customer feedback, use publicly available information, equipment teardowns, tradeshow/conference interaction, or other methods to understand customer challenges.
  • Translate the customer problem statement into system architectures comprising multiple ADI technologies and signal chains.
  • Work with marketing to define and execute proof of concepts and reference designs. This work involves includes developing PCB HW and firmware for MCU/APU/FPGA’s and creation of test plans and evaluation reports
  • Gather processor/security/cybersecurity requirements for focus applications in the industrial automation space.
  • Sales & customer support throughout the development process to deliver mutual success, including providing the correct architecture definition, system level hardware, software development, prototypes and supporting collateral.
  • Clear communication to internal and external stakeholders including customers, partners, team members, and collaborating ADI teams.
  • Grow strong technical and business networks internal & external to ADI & leverage to create differentiating solutions. Collaborate with the Industrial Automation Business Unit organization, other technology groups and Horizon 3 organization to develop new use cases which are consistent with ADI’s high level strategy and aspirations, along with our current capabilities and development roadmaps.
  • Identification of emerging technology trends and translation of these into product proposals that drive the development of ADI’s business and technology roadmaps.
  • Technical customer visits to help in the definition and promotion of system level solutions and help resolve design issues.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent with typically 7yrs+ of relevant industrial safety and security experience.
  • Experience in defining, developing and evaluating firmware and hardware for embedded systems including FPGA’s.
  • Familiarity with PCB development (preferably with expertise in high-speed digital design or power circuits, which contain: microcontrollers, DDR memories, Ethernet, FPGAs, Buck/Flyback converters).
  • Experience with most major industrial and IoT protocols including Ethernet/IP, PROFINET, EtherCAT, ModbusTCP, BACnet/IP, TSN, TCP/UDP, MQTT
  • Strong collaborative mindset with an ability to work in a cross-functional environment, demonstrating delivered value to internal & external stakeholders
  • Skilled communicator able to aggregate information and proliferate it to various stakeholders that range from subject matter experts to novices
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize several concurrent projects
  • An avid learner who approaches challenges with curiosity and resilience, seeking data to help build understanding
  • Ability to travel ~20% of yearly work days
