Support Center - IrvingIn this role you will direct a team of Software Engineers to build and maintain exciting experiences for our customers that differentiates Michaels in the e-As a Director of Software Engineering, you will direct software development, delivery and support efforts of highly scalable ecommerce digital platform. You will provide leadership and direction to technical managers, architects, engineers to drive technical excellence, and ensuring the successful execution of ecommerce initiatives. Your role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, setting strategic direction, and staying abreast of industry trends to deliver innovative digital solutions that meet business objectives.

  • Collaborate with business and technology executives to understand the organization’s business strategy and objectives. Provide strategic leadership for the engineering team, ensuring alignment with overall business goals and objectives.
  • Responsible for defining and executing technical strategy for ecommerce platform, ensuring scalability, security, and optimal site performance.
  • Partner with product managers, UX designers, digital, marketing, analytics and operations team to align technical solutions with business needs.
  • Provide deep and broad expertise in ecommerce domain for evaluating emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices to drive the innovation. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and learning within the engineering team.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership to drive the execution of overall product vision by leading the teams that architect, design and build the platform, and collaborate with other engineering, product, infrastructure, and security leaders and teams to operate a highly scalable MACH based platform.
  • Responsible for choosing and implementing appropriate technologies and tools such as catalog & pricing/promotion engine, CMS, SEO & A/B testing tools, Caching, Akamai, ETL, search & recommendation engine, Monitoring & Alerting tools etc. to support the digital platform and site operations.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and technology partners. Responsible for evaluating and selecting third-party solutions that align with the digital business strategy.
  • Oversee project timelines, resource allocation, and budget management for the digital initiatives.
  • Provide the leadership and act as a point of escalation for technical issues, working closely with the team to identify and resolve challenges promptly.
  • Implement and champion agile methodologies and best practices within the engineering team to enhance productivity and responsiveness to changing business needs.
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, career development, and management of the engineering team, fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, or STEM related field of study

Minimum Special Certifications or Technical Skills

  • 7+ years of experience in microservices based platform engineering leadership, with tangible accomplishments in ecommerce or similar customer-centric digital applications.
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience and a proven track record of successfully architecting and building highly available, scalable, and low latency ecommerce digital systems.
  • Strategic thought leader, problem solver, platform thinker with strong product and business orientation.
  • Proven experience in leading, architecting and building ecommerce solutions on major cloud platforms (Google Cloud, AWS, or Azure).
  • Experience in front-end technologies such as React, Next.js, Angular and back-end technologies such as Springboot, Node.js, Python or similar.
  • A passion for staying up to date with the latest industry trends, cloud technologies, front-end frameworks, and API development practices.
  • Extensive experience in scaling and optimizing web applications and APIs for performance and security in a cloud environment. Experience with building headless commerce and responsive web applications.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and project management tools.
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
  • Expertise in leading diverse, geographically distributed teams and in navigating the complexities associated with different locations

Minimum Type of Experience the Job Requires

  • 10+ years of experience in Software development
  • 7+ years leading platform engineering teams with growing responsibility
  • Experience with ecommerce development with microservices architecture

  • Ability to navigate a rapidly changing landscape, while handling multiple responsibilities
  • Experience as a successful tech leader building, managing and mentoring engineering teams
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Be an action oriented, independent, self-starter comfortable working in an unstructured, fast paced environment
  • Proven ability to manage multiple, time-sensitive products and competing priorities simultaneously with minimum guidance and high attention to detail
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
