The Collins Aerospace Applied Research & Technology organization seeks candidates with proven research credentials in software-defined radio (SDR) technologies, to join the Connected & Real-time Systems Group in Cork, Ireland. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong mix of theoretical knowledge and applied experience in the application of SDR technologies for the design, prototyping, and demonstration of advanced aeronautical communications, navigation, and surveillance systems (CNS), including terrestrial (TN) and non-terrestrial wireless networks (NTN), GNSS, space-based services, and radar applications.

This is a research focused role to shape future aerospace technologies from concept definition through to demonstration. Successful candidates should be able to demonstrate outstanding track records applicable to one or more of:

  • Analysis, simulation, and prototyping of novel waveform and physical layer techniques for next-generation CNS services and framing the associated benefits in terms of network and system level performance.
  • Prototyping and evaluation of SDR-based systems for RF frequencies beyond 6 GHz on high-performance embedded computing architectures, including MPSoC, FPGA, and GPU-based platforms.

Some knowledge of RF subsystem design, 5G/6G physical layer and technology trends including advanced waveforms for joint sensing and communication, RIS, MIMO, and AI-based communication and networking is highly desirable but not essential. Familiarity with aeronautical communication, navigation, and surveillance technologies is also desirable.

  • Contribute to a growing research agenda for future aerospace systems within the Collins Aerospace Advanced Technology research community, including supporting technical strategy and business development.
  • Execute R&D activities within an international research community, including technology development within collaborative multi-national research programs.
  • Provide competitive advantage for Collins Aerospace business units as part of a multidisciplinary and international team of experts.

Qualifications & Competencies

  • Motivated self-starter with a strong enthusiasm to learn and passion for speed and agility towards demonstrating innovative technology concepts.
  • Well-organized with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work in international teams.
  • Willing to champion and challenge new technical ideas and adapt to new challenges beyond original field of expertise.
  • Able to partner with universities, government agencies, national labs, and professional organizations to meet organizational objectives within time and budget constraints.

Education & Experience

  • A MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, ideally with a few years of professional experience.
