The Team

The Edge Networking team exist to provide the connectivity from the edge to SEEK's applications and ensure we provide visibility, performance, security and reliability of SEEK's cloud networking infrastructure. The Engineering Manager is responsible for a leading team of engineers with a diverse portfolio of skills, knowledge and experience to provide these capabilities to SEEK's engineering teams. This team is remote-friendly with members working from a variety of locations.

Responsibilities

People

  • Accountable for managing individual performance and professional growth, including personal development and/or leadership capabilities via coaching and mentoring
  • Grow team member functional capabilities either directly through line management & coaching efforts or indirectly through technical leaders
  • Direct management of a team(s). Create and maintain a robust team culture that embraces delivery, ownership, teamwork, learning and continual improvement. Maintaining the wellbeing of the team by fostering safety, inclusivity, fun and diversity of thought is critical.
  • Lead recruitment and onboarding of permanent and contractor team members in line with SEEK’s hiring process
  • Lead through change, applying SEEK’s change principles to deliver effective change management

Delivery

  • Lead multi-functional software development team(s) in setting and aligning Team, Product, Service or Platform OKRs (or equivalent goal setting frameworks), connecting strategy to delivery in partnership with Partners and Stakeholders. Deliver exceptional customer outcomes against agreed goals with urgency, quality and at scale
  • Facilitation of regular engagement and communication with broad working groups including Leadership Team’s, steering committees, and executives to ensure that system / service / platform health, ongoing development and any risks/issues are visible and well understood by partners
  • Manage the balance of time, scope, cost, and quality for team owned projects and programs. Embed effective agile practices within your team and deliver outcomes safely, predictably, and smoothly in a complex environment
  • Have a great understanding of the customers your team(s) serve, putting their needs at the centre of all engineering development, guiding priorities based on where impact can be most significant
  • Accountability for any commercial management including operating budgets (CAPEX/OPEX), all financial aspects of project or team costs, vendor management and contract negotiations as required.

Technology

  • Ensure services / systems / platforms are fit for purpose, well architected and follow current SEEK development practices
  • Maintain services health in accordance with customer experience, security, performance, availability, maintainability, deployability and efficiency measures.
  • Develop and maintain technical roadmaps to communicate and guide the evolution of services /systems / platforms
  • Discover and collaborate with Technical Leaders and the wider Technical Community to assess and implement new methodologies and technologies
  • Custodianship for the systems we build or buy, within your team’s ownership. Ensuring systems that you own, serve their intended purpose whilst being performant (Customer Experience), well run and maintained (Operations), suit the larger eco-system (Architecture), are secure (Security) and cost efficient (Cost).

Requirements

Essential Skills and Experience

People:

  • Previous line management experience, including coaching and mentoring team members to grow their careers
  • Demonstrated ability in helping to build robust teams, with a focus on psychological safety, inclusiveness, and diversity
  • Previous experience recruiting and onboarding software engineers and non-technical software delivery roles
  • Understanding of change principles and delivering effective team through change as required.

Delivery:

  • Highly developed stakeholder management and communication skills to effectively deliver and report on ongoing development or project success
  • Broad knowledge and experience applying agile frameworks and lean thinking to deliver world class software development outcomes
  • Sourcing, preparing & analysing data to support product & delivery decisions
  • Ability to quickly break down a problem and then propose options and a recommended way forward

Technology:

  • Strong experience working in teams that have built highly reliable and scalable products and codebases that are secure (OWASP), resilient, cost effective whilst easy to build, release and maintain
  • Experience developing and embedding technical practices in Engineering teams.
  • Prior experience partnering with Engineering & Architecture leaders in striving for technical excellence to build a viable long-term code base, whilst balancing and articulating the right solutions for the organisation’s immediate needs

Desirable Experience, Skills and Competencies

  • Experience in growing technical & non-technical capabilities of team members and a sound
  • Ability to effectively influence with senior partners across the organisation
  • Demonstrated experience fostering team environments that support agile practices, continuous
  • Experience with the setting and alignment of team OKR’s (or equivalent goal-setting framework)
  • Programme management techniques covering key concepts like risk management, scope control, delivery, budgeting, etc. Builds out, communicates, and completes achievement driven project plans where they are appropriate.
  • Make or influence decisions supported by key data points whilst considering the balance of challenging business, customer, and technical priorities
  • Ability to build a culture that ensures that engineers feel confident in challenging current practice and that supports continuous improvement in a team environment.
  • Ability to demonstrate clear and definite ownership of a system(s) ensuring they are performant, well operated & maintained, architected, secure, and cost efficient. Demonstrated experience in developing forward looking technical roadmaps for owned systems and services.
