About the Opportunity

Job Summary

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available at the Earth Surface Systems Lab at Northeastern University. The Postdoc will be based at Northeastern University’s Coastal Sustainability Institute (CSI) and will work closely with PI Samuel Muñoz. The CSI has a strong research presence in earth system science research and there are many opportunities for interaction and collaboration both there and in the greater Boston area.

Key Responsibilities

The Postdoc will work on an NSF-funded project that examines the dynamics of floodplain sedimentation, and broadens participation in geomorphology through immersive research experiences for undergraduate students from community colleges. The Postdoc's main role in the project will be to use observations, models, and simulations that give new insight into floodplain sedimentation, and provide research opportunities for undergraduate students. The Postdoc will collaborate with PI Munoz and with faculty at the New Hampshire Technological Institute (NHTI). The Postdoc will also be expected to lead and participate in outreach projects.

Qualifications

Must have a Ph.D.; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar.

Applicants will be expected to develop and lead projects. Ideal candidates will have knowledge of fluvial geomorphology and sedimentology. Candidates should have a strong track record of publication; have demonstrated an ability in statistical analysis, GIS, and hydraulic model simulation; be able to manage and analyze large datasets; have strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills; and be able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team. Experience modelling with the software HEC-RAS is desirable but not required.

The initial appointment is for 12 months with the opportunity to extend the position for up to 24 months.
