Position Summary

The Manager, Data Engineering is a pivotal role within National University's Data Engineering team, responsible for leading the design, development, and maintenance of robust and scalable data infrastructure to support the university's diverse data needs. This role will collaborate with various stakeholders, including faculty, researchers, administrators, and IT teams, to ensure data is effectively collected, processed, stored, and made accessible for analysis and decision-making. The Data Engineering Manager will oversee a team of data engineers, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment to drive continuous improvement in data management practices and technologies.

Essential Functions:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a comprehensive data engineering strategy aligned with the university's overall goals and objectives.
  • Team Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a team of data engineers, ensuring their technical growth and fostering a high-performing team culture.
  • Data Architecture: Oversee the design and maintenance of a scalable and flexible data architecture to support the university's diverse data sources and use cases.
  • Data Pipeline Development: Oversee the development and maintenance of robust data pipelines for data ingestion, transformation, and loading.
  • Data Quality Assurance: Implement and enforce data quality standards to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and integrity of data.
  • Data Access and Governance: Establish and maintain data access controls and governance policies to ensure data security and compliance.
  • Collaboration: Partner with stakeholders across the university to understand their data needs and deliver solutions that meet those needs
  • Technology Evaluation: Stay abreast of emerging data technologies and evaluate their potential to enhance the university's data infrastructure.
  • Lead, motivate, and guide team to ensure alignment with National University mission, vision, values, and departmental objectives.
  • Set clear performance expectations, provide feedback, and coach team members to enhance their performance.
  • Identify problems, analyze root causes, and implement solutions to improve processes and outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervisor duties to include: Hire, train, and develop Data Engineers and Architects.

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in data architecture, statistics, computer science, required.
  • Master’s degree in data architecture, statistics, computer science, preferred.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of related experience required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing others in a data environment preferred.
  • Working experience with Data Management and Governance solutions (i.e., Data Warehousing, Data Lakes and Reservoirs) in both relational technologies (e.g. Oracle) and no-SQL solutions (Hadoop) for both on-prem and cloud (Azure) deployments required.
  • Experience in higher education preferred.
  • Experience working in a technology-driven enterprise preferred.
  • All skills, abilities and education will be considered for minimum qualifications.

  • Experience with Cloud infrastructure such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud.
  • Strong strategic thinking and exceptional analytical capability.
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills; Must be able to communicate effectively at all levels across the organization.
  • Requires sophisticated business acumen in order to successfully translate complex technical topics into business solutions and strategies.
  • Demonstrated track record of executing changes to core business processes through the innovative use of quantitative techniques.
  • Advanced negotiating, influencing, and conflict resolution skills at all organizational levels.
  • Drive and commitment to what is necessary to get the job done efficiently, thoroughly, and professionally.
  • Innovative. Seeks new and creative ways to approach analytical exercises and development projects.

  • Guide the day-to-day activities of a geographically distributed team, setting department goals, providing thought leadership, directing managers and senior individual contributors, and establishing a high bar of execution quality.
  • Provide technical and professional leadership and mentorship on a diverse range of subject matter areas, such as personnel management and career growth to technical architectures and solutioning.
  • Partner with and collect best practices for your team that can be replicated across multiple cross functional teams.
  • Partner with your team to develop services and offerings that scale and are repeatable.
  • Intermediate use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite Applications such as Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook. Experience using Student Information System (SIS).

Travel: Some Travel Required; occasional when needed.

Candidate receiving offers will be offered a salary/pay rate commensurate with experience that vary based on a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and competencies. Absent exceptional circumstances, candidates will be offered a salary within this range for this position. The minimum salary will be offered based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency. Compensation Range:

Annual Salary: $87,923.00 - $118,690.00
