POSITION SUMMARY

This position will be instrumental in leading accounting operations across multiple critical areas. This pivotal role encompasses the leadership of the revenue team, lease team, fixed assets team and corporate accounting. The ideal candidate will thrive in a dynamic environment, demonstrating a proven track record of growing and guiding a team towards achieving strategic objectives. This position is part of the larger Alterra Mountain Company Shared Services Accounting team and will work closely with other departments within Shared Services and resorts to ensure all financial information is accurately recorded for the areas mentioned above.

Additionally, this position supports Alterra Mountain Company’s accounting department through developing key accounting policy documents as it relates to new US GAAP or application of existing US GAAP to Alterra Mountain Company’s business units.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Establish key operational strategies, in coordination with the Controller, for the revenue, lease, fixed assets and corporate accounting teams, by evaluating current practices/processes and developing a multi-year roadmap to improve the stakeholder experience, reduce mistakes, improve efficiency and focus on end-to-end processes.
  • Supports the larger Alterra Mountain Company Shared Services Accounting team strategic objectives and key performance indicators.
  • Ensures the appropriate application of accounting in accordance with GAAP for revenue, leases, fixed assets, and corporate entities.
  • Supports and develops the personal and professional capacity of team members (three direct reports and 10+ indirect reports), including coaching, training, mentoring, peer exchanges, and continuing education.
  • Key responsibilities related to the revenue team include:
    • Monthly review of Ikon revenue recognition models and Ikon partner payments.
    • Periodic review of point-of-sale (POS) product configuration to ensure appropriate timing of revenue recognition.
    • Maintain and improve comprehensive revenue recognition documentation to support the Company’s policies and procedures.
    • Collaborate with Revenue Management and FP&A to ensure all new revenue products are evaluated for compliance with GAAP.
  • Key responsibilities related to the fixed asset team include:
    • Monthly review of capital project spend analysis (i.e. # of projects opened/closed, aging of capital project codes.
    • Monthly review of depreciation expense variance analysis.
    • Maintain and improve comprehensive fixed asset capitalization documentation to support the Company’s policies and procedures.
    • Assist in the planning and ensure execution of fixed asset team physical fixed asset observations as determined per Company’s policies and procedures.
    • Collaborate with other Shared Services departments to ensure end-to-end process for capital reporting is meeting requirements.
  • Key responsibilities related to the lease team include:
    • Monthly review of significant new lease contracts.
    • Semi-annual review of the Company’s incremental borrowing rate.
    • Quarterly review of lease rollforwards.
  • Key responsibilities related to the corporate accounting analysis team include:
    • Accountable for the appropriate application of GAAP for corporate entities.
    • Ensure monthly variance analysis for both the balance sheet and P&L are completed with the appropriate explanations for all corporate entities.
    • Ensure monthly balance sheet reconciliations are completed and unexplained variances are resolved on a timely basis for all corporate entities.
    • Support corporate accounting analysis team related to one-time projects, contract review, and process improvements.
  • Other Duties:
    • Oversee the creation and issuance of technical accounting memos for other areas of the business as needed through research and collaboration with business or process owners.
    • Communicate with stakeholders regarding policies and procedures, including changes.
    • Participate in external audits as needed.
    • Ensure all internal control documentation and compliance related to the above responsibilities is properly prepared.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge

  • Detailed understanding of US GAAP and experience in applying to various transactions and fact patterns.
    • Experience in applying ASC 606 to various revenue streams.
    • Experience in applying ASC 985 or ASC 350 to internally developed software.
    • Experience in applying ASC 842 to various contracts and complex situations.

Skills & Abilities

  • Has strong financial analytical abilities combined with advanced accounting knowledge.
  • Proven ability to evaluate businesses and identify financial, accounting or industry risk related transactions.
  • Highly proficient in oral and written communication skills. Is comfortable in speaking to large groups of people, including C-Suite.
  • Strong project management skills and able to multi-task and manage multiple projects and other administrative tasks.
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated with a strong work ethic, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Deep experience in leading individuals and teams with proven success in mentoring, coaching and career development.
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Proficient in use of technology, specifically Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or OneStream a plus.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA required.
  • Masters in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration a plus

Experience

  • Minimum 10+ years of US GAAP Accounting in public accounting or equivalent industry experience.

The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the Alterra Mtn Co Shared Services Inc. salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, location, merit system, quantity or quality of production, responsibilities, and regular and/or necessary travel. The range listed is just one component of the Company’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term and long-term incentives and many region-specific benefits.

Denver area base salary range: $127,000 to $184,000 per year
