Department Overview

The Intellectual Property Department of Rakuten Group Inc. is a specialized division responsible for formulating and executing IP strategies for over 70 services provided by the group. We closely collaborate with various departments to support the achievement of business units' management principles and overall strategies through our IP strategies. By protecting, managing, and leveraging intellectual property, we enhance the competitive strength of Rakuten Group and drive business growth.

The IPX Section, launched on April 1, 2024, focuses on patent dispute resolution, qualitative improvement of patent practices in the fintech sector, and the efficiency and systematization of patent management operations. We are engaged in various new initiatives to achieve these goals.

We are looking to work with individuals who can handle ongoing patent dispute cases or lead the development of intellectual property functions in line with the restructuring of our group's fintech business.

Position Details

You will be involved in one of the following tasks.

Patent Disputes

Tasks involved in patent dispute cases include.

- Technical examination of the patents, products, and services involved (determining infringement, essentiality, invalidity, etc.)

- Coordination with internal business/development departments

- Developing negotiation strategies based on the results of technical examinations

- Negotiating with the opposing party and drafting agreements towards resolving disputes

- Planning and implementing a group-wide patent dispute resolution strategy

Fintech IP

- Setting up IP functions and organizations in a reorganized fintech group company

- Collaborating with Rakuten Group, Inc.'s IP department as needed to resolve individual IP cases in the fintech group company

Work Environment

Intellectual Property Department of Rakuten Group, Inc.: Approximately 30 members

IPX section: 8 members

Our section consists predominantly of mid-career members who have come from the intellectual property departments of other corporations.

Mandatory Qualifications:

- Knowledge of software and control systems

- Business-level English, Japanese proficiency

Patent Disputes

- Experience in patent disputes, foreign affairs, contracts, licensing, and litigation in a corporate intellectual property department

- Experience in communicating in English in patent dispute cases

Fintech IP

- Broad experience in corporate intellectual property departments and organizational management

- Experience in patent clearance and prosecution

Desired Qualifications:

Patent Disputes

- Experience in handling dispute and litigation cases, particularly in the US and Europe

- Experience in handling dispute and litigation cases involving standard essential patents

- Technical experience and knowledge in video codecs and wireless communications

- Experience in coordinating dispute responses with affiliated companies within the corporate group

Fintech IP

- Knowledge of the fintech sector's business and services

- Experience in clearance and prosecution for trademarks and designs

- Experience in handling copyright-related matters

- Experience in managing (administrating) patents, trademarks, and designs

- Experience in budgeting, management, and accounting within an intellectual property department

- Experience in developing business workflows and information management within an intellectual property department

- Experience in establishing an IP organization within a company

- Experience as the head of a small intellectual property organization (approximately 3-5 people)
