Staff Engineer - Application

Primary Objective:

To provide pre-sales technical support and leadership. Creates MTS value by providing technical expertise in the application and configuration of engineered products/components and service upgrades to meet customer needs. Leads the translation of customer requirements into a proposed technical solution. Serves as the technical resource on MTS standard, aftermarket product, and/or custom product testing applications within assigned area(s).

Major Areas of Accountability:

1. Provides technical advice/qualification criteria to sales regarding product/systems/service, according to established standards. May provide guidance/consultation to Sales on technically complex sales leads.
2. Gathers information to thoroughly understand the customer’s technical requirements, specifications and needs. Establishes technical credibility with the prospective customer.
3. Creates proposed solutions demonstrating MTS’ value to the prospective customer.
4. Participates in negotiations, as required, by providing input on the technical aspects of the proposed solution.
5. Plans and conducts effective customer presentations, as required, in partnership with Sales.
6. Responsible for a clean hand-off on new projects to Operations.
7. May assist in conceiving, refining and implementing marketing tools/techniques (brochures, video, trade shows, etc.) used to promote products and capabilities.
8. Participate in design reviews of an engineered system with the customer to finalize all details. (apply to senior levels)
9. Participates in professional societies and society committees to stay informed of latest testing trends, to build MTS industry knowledge and to influence testing standards, as applicable. (apply to senior levels)
10. Leads multi-disciplined, cross-functional team of personnel engaged at an application level to service customer needs. (apply to senior levels)
11. Other duties assigned.

Requirements

General Qualifications:

• BS degree in engineering/technical discipline or equivalent work experience
• 9 years of relevant experience or product aptitude.
• Willingness to travel 10 to 50 percent of the time depending upon the region.
• Technical aptitude and decision-making.
• Selling and business acumen / project management ability.
• Ability to communicate complex technical situations to a non-technical audience; ability to foster credibility with a technical audience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated ability to develop and propose concepts and test methodologies in established MTS area of expertise.
• Provides expertise in assigned domain area, creating concepts to moderately complex testing problems.
• Ability to frame problem statements, identify solution criteria and evaluate alternative features and/or trade-offs to create moderately complex system solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage assigned custom solutions.
• Leads assigned technical pursuit team through moderately complex solution creation.
• Very seasoned expert engineer who is seen as the company subject matter expert and works on the most complex engineering responsibilities where deep critical thinking can be applied. These are likely to be multidisciplinary projects that have a very significant impact to the business. Looks for areas to apply process improvements, and manage initiatives to see them through to successful completion. Solves the toughest problems and advances the engineering capability of the company.
