Mission

The Utility Distribution Power Line Designer’s mission is to work within a team of designers to design efficient and reliable distribution lines and perform relevant design tasks as required, as part of the Distribution group in our Energy and Resources sector. The Designer will coordinate within activities to maintain project schedules and ensure successful project within budget and client satisfaction. This is a hybrid role that can be based in the Greater Toronto Area or in the province of Ontario ideally in proximity to one of our offices.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform site visits to determine the nature of work required (poles, conductors, anchors, equipment condition assessment)
  • Utilize GIS data to design overhead & underground distribution networks.
  • Prepare construction drawings for proposed distribution systems (OH and UG)
  • Produce job estimates, bills of material, labour & enter material acquisition requests.
  • Circulate proposed plans for review and comment by utility and city stakeholders.
  • Complete applications for all applicable municipality construction permits
  • Coordinate project schedules with utilities and contractors.
  • Design and/or verification of third-party attachments on utility poles and obtain approvals.
  • Interact with internal / external contacts as necessary for design details.
  • Produce regular project status update reports.
  • Review of designs in order to ensure accuracy, perform quality control and quality checks prior to project release.
  • Ensure completed work adheres to engineering and construction standards and Ontario Regulation 22/04

Requirements

  • A College Degree in Electrical field
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in developing designs for overhead pole lines, underground duct bank installations and residential subdivision renewals
  • Working knowledge of overhead and underground distribution construction standards, CSA standards C22-3 no 1-20 and C22.3 no 7-20. Strong knowledge of THESL and Alectra Distribution Standards will be considered as an advantage.
  • Working knowledge on Electrical Utility projects, construction & design practices
  • Working knowledge in applicable design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Microstation, SPIDAcalc, Pull Planner etc.)
  • Working knowledge on various Electrical Utility GIS platforms for accessing electrical asset data
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and effectively. Ability to create effective working relationships with fellow employees, clients' representatives, government agencies and the public.
  • Good standing and records with OACETT
  • Valid Class G (Ontario) driving licence.
