Purpose

The Coding and Billing Lead and Training Specialist oversees the Coding and Billing team, facilitates the revenue cycle process following patient accounts through the entire billing process after charge entry to completion of payment process working within Dell Medical School’s electronic health record (EHR). This position serves as the liaison between clinical departments, Patient Financial Services, payers, and patients and maintains accurate information regarding patient accounts receivable. Additionally, this role is responsible for training and development within the Coding and Billing team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise the Coding and Billing Specialist team, providing daily direction and support while promoting a collaborative team environment. Partner closely with the Coding and Billing Supervisor, Benefits and Authorization Lead and Training Specialist, and Revenue Cycle Manager to resolve issues and ensure seamless patient care. Motivate, train, and recognize team members, ensuring optimal performance and addressing staffing shortages effectively. Assist with complex cases, identify areas for process improvement, and enhance team productivity while maintaining employee satisfaction.
  • Acquire comprehensive skills and knowledge required for all Coding and Billing roles, including claim creation, account credits, and AR. Act as a subject matter expert, handling escalated issues. Assist with conducting performance evaluations to optimize team efficiency.
  • Participate in new hire selection and conduct training sessions as needed, keeping training materials current and ensuring adherence to new procedures. Assist with maintaining and updating the practice’s Revenue Cycle Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Design and execute learning strategies and programs for Coding and Billing staff, focusing on onboarding, continuing education, and skill development. Collaborate with Revenue Cycle leadership to align training initiatives with organizational goals and promote excellence and customer service. Evaluate training effectiveness and support career development through performance assessments and career path planning.
  • Conduct quality reviews and audits of claims, AR worklists, account credits, and tasks to maintain accuracy. Assist in monitoring work queues and productivity metrics to ensure targets are met or exceeded; distribute workload effectively across the team. Implement various training methods (e.g., classroom lectures, online modules, job-shadowing) to enhance staff competency and performance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience in healthcare. Proficiency in electronic practice management systems and billing processes. Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders. Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, commercial, and managed care insurance plans. Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in MS Office and other relevant computer applications.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree. Bilingual in English and Spanish. Experience with Athena or similar EMR systems. Previous experience in a multi-practice healthcare setting. AAPC - Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Certification

Salary Range

$63,000+ depending on qualifications
