About the Role

The Finance Officer provides professional accounting support to Food Banks Canada by leading the Accounts Payable functions and performing day-to-day financial transactions, processing payments, and record maintenance. This role is responsible for distributing grants to food banks across the network, and liaising with food banks, vendors, and internal stakeholders. The Finance Officer provides assistance to the Finance Manager to ensure all financial records and reports are in compliance with accounting standards, the policies of Food Banks Canada, and that they reflect the strong fiscal management of the organization.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Complete the Accounts Payable function, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to ensure efficient payment processing for supplier accounts and grant distribution
  • Perform day-to-day financial transactions, diligently verifying, classifying, and recording accounts payable data
  • Review supporting documents for invoices and credits, ensuring accurate recording with the appropriate GL codes and sub-account codes
  • Validate invoices for proper authorizations, approval limits and account allocations, and verify that invoices align with corresponding purchase order unit prices, quality or services commitment
  • Record payable invoices in Business Central and calculate the appropriate provincial GST/HST rebates
  • Save accounts payable invoices and contract files in both Business Central and SharePoint
  • Facilitate the investigation and resolution of inquiries and complaints pertaining to billing and payments
  • Create weekly EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) batches using Business Central
  • Assist in collecting EFT vendor information and coordinate with the Grants team to gather grant recipient EFT details
  • With support of the Finance Manager, ensure all accounting transactions comply with internal controls, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), and the Income Tax Act
  • Assist the Finance team with the execution and management of annual and special audits
  • Other duties as assigned

What You Will Need

  • 4+ years’ experience in an accounting position for a business or non-profit organization
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree or equivalent in finance or accounting
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with an advanced understanding of Excel
  • Experience using Business Central, or a similar accounting software, is an asset

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time, Monday-Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work. This position is home-based but must be located within 100km of the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Occasional travel within Canada may be required
