The Principal Engineer (Naval Architect) will have three main areas of responsibility; managing their engineering staff, assist in the development and certification or approval of the technical outputs (including producing a safe design), supporting the programmes to deliver to cost (hours) and time.

A Principal Engineer (Naval Architect) will be accountable to the site Engineering Manager, you will be allocated to a programme where you will be responsible to the Programme Engineering Manager.

Key Tasks and Activities

  • Responsible for engineering standards of the Naval Architect resource allocated to your programme, assisting in correctly scoped and resourced Naval Architect team to meet site General Managers and Programme Managers delivery requirements.
  • Ensure the application of engineering processes and quality assurance procedures within the Programme Naval Architect Engineering team.
  • Instil a delivery ethos with the Programme Naval Architect Engineering team.
  • Resolve Naval Architect issues on your Programme by discussing technical issues with other technical leads. If a resolution cannot be determined highlight the issue to the Programme Engineering Manager.
  • Be the key communication link to the Programme Engineering Manager daily, at programme design and safety reviews and present engineering programme reports.
  • Identify Programme Assumptions, Risks and Issues.
  • Be able to lead technical discussions and present technical solutions to customers, from Concept to Detailed Design and Production.
  • Ensure all quality, safety and environmental company standards and procedures are applied.
  • Promote continuous professional development opportunities.
  • Maintain own continuous professional development currency.
  • Maintain accurate Configuration Management of all Design Documentation.
  • Identify IP and ensure appropriate steps are taken to safeguard company intellectual assets.
  • Operate within security and confidentiality requirements assigned by client organisations.
  • Develop and mentor individuals for their progression.
  • Assist in the recruitment of Naval Architects to meet growth strategy aims.
  • Assist Bid Managers with engineering input to Bid responses.
  • When asked by the Engineering Manager (Governance), support the Technical Authority to conduct Engineering Reviews.
  • Support LFE sessions from each Programme and improvements in the Engineering Policies and Process.

Requirements

  • Formal qualification in Engineering; Electrical Engineering, Marine or Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or equivalent.
  • Significant experience of working in the marine industry (Oil & Gas, Renewables, Commercial, Cruise & Ferry, Defence), and has relevant design code knowledge.
  • Knowledge of procurement and design processes (discussing requirements with suppliers, preparing documentation for bids, reviewing and approving technical deliverables).
  • Experience assisting with the development of Engineering Design processes.
  • Must be proficient in the use of MS Office (Outlook / Word / Excel) and Engineering Design Software.
  • Must hold current Driving Licence.
  • Requirement for short notice/working outside of normal shift pattern as dictated by the task.
  • Ideally in possession of, or confirmed willing to be trained in;

Working at Height training,

Confined Space training.
