Manager, Data Platforms

CPP Investments is looking at technology and proven people leaders, to lead a team of talented data engineers, data analysts & data stewards who’ll build data capabilities and support a wide range of data flows and use cases to advance the Fund’s data-driven investment decisioning and deliver transformational programs.

The leader should have hands on technology experience, in addition to excellent execution capability, proven experience in building and developing teams, global mindset, collaborative and demonstrated experience in remote working setup across time-zones.

The leader would be accountable for designing and implementing the end-to-end data platform needs from managing foundational processing and data storage, to building and operating scalable pipelines, to developing analytical tools, and enterprise reporting applications to support various use cases.

Role-specific Accountabilities:

• Build a high performing global team with appropriate competencies and skillsets to deliver services that meet and strive to exceed business expectations.
• Provide technical oversight to a team of diverse data engineers/analysts/stewards to drive design and implementation of transformational data initiatives, plan team activities and priorities, provide coaching to technical aspect of work.
• Applies knowledge, leadership experience and be the data engineering technical leader to drive design and implement appropriate data architectures, infrastructure, data ingestion pipelines and enablement tools, processes, and controls to meet business needs and to help team to scale.
• Seeks and incorporates diverse perspectives to guide the team to resolve complex multi-dimensional problems and enhance overall business process or program value.
• Drive team engagement, performance management, provide feedback and opportunities to help team members grow and achieve their professional development goals.
• Work collaboratively with business stakeholders, senior IT management, Data Engineering Teams, Data Architecture, Data solutions, and Data Operations.
• Experience in hiring, organizing, and motivating teams and directing multiple priorities simultaneously serving multiple stakeholders.
• Build clean software and systems abstractions, and understand that modular, reusable components are key to manageably supporting thousands of pipelines and beyond as we scale.
• Work cross-functionally: with upstream teams to guide and consult them on how to structure their data to expose good data contracts, and with downstream including data consumers and data teams to expose well-designed and well-documented data models and metrics.
• Closely partner with other data engineering, and data governance team to provide design recommendation for use cases and drive execution excellence by resolving increasingly complex issues.
• Promote a DevOps & Quality Engineering culture within the team to increase automation while decreasing manual interventions and incidents.
• Evaluate emerging tech trends, experimenting with and learning new technologies, participating in internal & external technology communities, and mentoring other members of the engineering community.
• Act as a role model, demonstrating the CPP Investments values, providing clear management support and development to the team, and following all CPP Investments people processes.

Requirements

• Number of years of experience 15+ years and 5+ relevant experience.
• University degree in Engineering or Computer Science preferred.
• Hands-on expertise with AWS Data & Analytics, Cloud data platforms, data warehouse, business intelligence, data lakes and analytics products.
• Experience working with database query languages and cloud data warehouses/MPP databases (Redshift/Spectrum, Snowflake, etc).
• Experience with batch job scheduling, leveraging Apache Airflow, AWS EMR, PySpark, YARN, EKS, S3, HDFS, AWS Athena, AWS Glue, Lakeformation, AWS Step Functions.
• Experience in data modeling, data architecture, data engineering, data analysis and familiarity with ETL tools, data warehousing & big data architecture and business intelligence reporting/analytics.
• Knowledge of cloud-native approaches to build fast, flexible, and cost-effective data applications on any data lake, open-source column-oriented DBMS and/or big data OLAP engines for analytical processing.
• Experience with DataOps and various continuous delivery practices to deploy, support and operate data pipelines.
• Polished communication skills with experience presenting at the executive level. Ability to communicate credibly and persuasively with the broader organization and helping overcome the inevitable barriers to behavioral change.
• A “change agent” with proven ability to lead change across an organization in matters that require a major shift in thought and behavior.
• Proven ability to build strategic relationship and influence key stakeholders.
• Strong knowledge of software development best practices and patterns.
• Demonstrate strong facilitation, communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills.
