The Caseworker - Extenuating Circumstances provides specialized case management services to asylum seekers facing unique and challenging situations within the NYC Asylee Flex Program. This role involves addressing complex cases, coordinating specialized services, and providing targeted support to meet the specific needs of the asylum seekers. The Caseworker- Extenuating Circumstances must live within a 50-mile radius of the New York City metropolitan area.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify the unique needs and challenges of asylum seekers with extenuating circumstances.
  • Develop and implement individualized service plans to address specific needs and challenges.
  • Ability to utilize effective case management techniques, such as Motivational Interviewing, Psychological First Aid, Client and Trauma-Informed Care, use of verbal de-escalation techniques, and how to incorporate strength-based and solution-focused services.
  • Strong ability to research and establish community resources useful to asylees.
  • Coordinate with specialized service providers to ensure asylum seekers receive appropriate support that may include medical care, legal assistance, and mental health services.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all case management activities in the database.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support as needed.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed under stress.
  • Ensure compliance with program policies and procedures, including safeguarding sensitive information.
  • Advocate on behalf of asylum seekers to ensure they receive appropriate services and support.
  • Participate in regular team meetings and case conferences to review cases and ensure coordination of services.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all program policies and procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural competence, inclusivity, and sensitivity (e.g. trauma-informed care, emotional intelligence, shelter experience/background working with vulnerable populations such as asylees, refugees, and unhoused individuals)
  • Perform additional responsibilities as needed to support the program.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or other relevant behavioral science from an accredited institution.
  • At least 2 years of progressive case management experience, with experience in handling complex cases.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and other common office equipment.
  • Strong organizational abilities, outstanding writing and verbal communication skills, and the capacity to multitask.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with asylum seekers, refugees, or other vulnerable populations, particularly those with complex needs.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (Read, Write, and Speak) highly preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to work under stressful conditions and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods.
  • Visual acuity required to complete paperwork and computer work.
