Software development

Engineers at Boston Dynamics rely on simulation tools to build our incredible robot control, autonomy, and manipulation behaviors. These tools are not only key to developing, visualizing, and troubleshooting what our robots do, but are also central to learning-based methods, such as reinforcement learning. To meet our growing needs, the Central Software team is looking for a Simulation Team Lead to help us accelerate and scale company-wide simulation efforts. To succeed in this role, you’ll need both strong technical software and team leadership skills. Bring your solid understanding of state-of-the-art simulation and rendering technologies and excitement to work alongside an experienced team of engineers you help build, to create the tools which let us deliver the next generation of amazing robot behaviors.

Day-to-Day activities will include:

  • Plan efforts to develop and deliver a strategic simulation roadmap and vision
  • Work with stakeholders across the company to ensure solutions meet diverse needs, balancing fidelity, speed, and other application constraints
  • Stay hands-on technically while managing a small team. Lead meetings and set the team's goals
  • Ensure delivered solution scale across relevant workflows, spanning local usage, cloud deployment, CI-based testing, integration with hardware, and so on.
  • Adapt simulation to learning-based approaches, including reinforcement learning (e.g., support GPU-based compute, etc.)
  • Lead and mentor team members by example, doing what’s needed for your team to succeed

To make an impact in this role you’ll bring:

  • Experience managing engaged engineering teams, leading projects, and breaking down complex problems/requirements into specific deliverables
  • A proven track record delivering simulation tools in robotics, autonomous vehicles, gaming or Visual FX
  • Demonstrated proficiency working (10+ years) in large multi-language repos and experience with C++, python, and other relevant tools
  • Experience both rendering technologies, spanning rasterized (GL, Metal, Vulkan) and ray-traced (RTX, OSpray, Eevee, Arnold, V-Ray) approaches
  • Experience with common physics (Bullet, Mujoco, ODE, Isaac Sim) and games engines (Unity, Unreal)
  • Experience with common interchange formats (USD, FBX) and DCC-based (Maya, Blender) workflows
  • Experience scaling simulation solutions to the cloud and parallelizing evaluation in support of learning-based approaches
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, or a related field

We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
