Under general supervision, the Manager of Research Computing will oversee the development, implementation, and management of advanced computing resources and services to support the research activities at LMU. This role involves collaborating with faculty, researchers, and IT staff to facilitate and inspire the innovative use of research technology, high-performance computing (HPC) systems, data storage solutions, and research software applications.

Position Specific Responsibilities/Accountabilities

  • Leadership and Management:
    • Provide consultation for research computing, research technology acquisition (including grant-funded), policies and processes for faculty usage of research technologies.
    • Develop and implement strategic plans for research computing infrastructure and services.
    • Plan research program development efforts including initiatives, communications, pilot programs, guidelines, and evaluative processes.
    • Participate in Information Technology Services departmental planning, policies, and procedures development, and decision-making; conducting user-satisfaction surveys and needs analyses.
    • Work with ITS infrastructure team to expand faculty usage of research computing services (e.g. high bandwidth Science DMZ, Artificial Intelligence services, etc).
  • Collaboration and Support:
    • Facilitate awareness campaigns, training sessions and workshops to expand research at LMU and enhance the scholarly communityโ€™s engagement with innovative research technologies.
    • Collaborate with department chairs, faculty, and researchers to understand their computing needs and provide tailored solutions.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for research computing inquiries and support requests.
    • Coordinates ITS support of research efforts including items such as data management and security.
    • In partnership with the Center for Faculty Development, promote and facilitate LMU research computing community groups to enable interdisciplinary engagement and collaboration.
  • Technical Expertise:
    • Ensure the effective installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of HPC systems, data storage, and related research computing resources.
    • Collaborate with the Information Security Team on research computing policy, practices, and standards in accordance with industry regulations and best practices.
    • Ensure data security and compliance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
    • Monitor system performance and recommend improvements to optimize resource utilization.
  • Project Management:
    • Manage research computing projects from inception to completion, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget constraints.
    • Coordinate with external vendors and service providers to procure and implement new technologies.
    • Prepare and present reports on the status and impact of research computing initiatives.
    • Develop, forecast, and manage the budget for Research computing support and work with the Director of Educational Technology on budgeting for all research computing services and infrastructure.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically a Masterโ€™s Degree (Doctorate preferred) from a four-year college or university in a related field or equivalent experience. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to keep abreast of regulation/policy changes.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in research computing or a related field, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with HPC systems, data storage solutions, and research software applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of strategy and project management and planning.
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating complex, highly technical information, as well as communications that establish and advance relationships.
  • Strong analytical skills required with a proven record of problem solving
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience communicating and interacting with university faculty.
  • Highly developed organizational skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, write, and interpret complex documents.

Salary range
