Director of Engineering

JOB PROFILE:

We are looking for a senior engineering leader who loves working with both people and software. We expect that you, as a leader, are passionate about building an environment where software engineers can achieve their full potential. As an engineer, you have a great understanding of modern development techniques and can be a partner and mentor for your leaders and teams to choose the best solutions. We expect that you can be an advocate of clean code, and clean architecture, TDD (Test Driven Development), pair programming and always welcome feedback. You will be given a lot of autonomy, and we want you to use the most of it and drive the team towards technical excellence. We hope you feel learning is a natural part of your workday and you have a high interest in keeping up with current best practices in your areas of expertise. In the role you will:

• Lead a team of diverse and talented engineering leaders and teams with various levels of expertise.
• Coach engineering leaders to grow, by supporting and giving them frequent feedback, setting individual goals, and assessing performance.
• Facilitate technical discussions and help to make the best decisions.
• Be a member of the Tribe Leadership Team shaping the culture and engineering practices of the entire Tribe.
• Partner with Tribe Product Owner to ensure we build the right solutions for our business goals.

Required:

• Experience in building and leading motivated, high performing teams working in an agile environment
• Excellent communication skills, ability to engage colleagues to thoughtfully work toward a single goal and help the team to adapt and succeed when things do not go exactly as planned.
• Broad technical experience to understand the complexity of services the team develops, challenge ideas and facilitate technical discussion.
• Practical experience in applying Domain-Driven Design principles to model complex business domains
• Practical software development experience with particular focus on good practices like clean code, design patterns, TDD/ATDD, pair programming etc.

Desirable :

• Experience with cloud native applications (preferably AWS)
• Experience with large scale event streaming architectures, messaging brokers (for example Kafka)
• Experience in designing, developing, and deploying microservices-based applications. This includes a strong understanding of service decomposition, API design, inter-service communication
• Experience with modern web technologies, e.g. web sockets, HTTP/2, REST, gRPC
• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes

RESPONSIBILITIES OF DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING

General:

• Accountable for the tribe’s Software Delivery & Operational performance; productivity and predictability.
• Accountable for recruitment, performance management, training of technical tribe members.
• Accountable for the technology and design of applications and services in alignment with architectural governance.
• Ensure adherence to the policies and standards set by the Central Engineering function
• Demonstrate technical mastery and be an inspirational leader who can mentor and ensure continuous development of competencies of our Engineering teams
• Responsible for “Design, Build and Run” of the tribe’s systems
• Responsible for the overall quality of the engineering assets; establish a test-driven culture
• Developing standards and procedures to ensure that quality standards are met and consistent.
• Building a culture of continuous improvement in quality, delivery agility, repeatability, and operational resilience.

Technical:

• Creates vision and strategy for technical development of services owned by the tribe
• Defines and owns technical requirements (for example Engineering Themes)
• Spends time hands-on writing and reviewing code
• Drives technical discussions and decisions
• Guides, defines, and reviews architecture solutions
• Defines technology stack and tooling used within the tribe
• Defines software quality standards and tooling for software testing
• Has ownership of engineering delivery of a key proposition

Team management:

• Grows team members and builds a high-performing team
• Spends time recruiting, and organizing activities that increase retention

Process:

• Continually tunes the team software process to deliver a sustainable and seamless flow of value
• Navigates and overcomes organizational processes and structures (i.e bureaucracy)
• Communicates, reports to and aligns with stakeholders
• Manages product and project delivery and risks

Product:

• Assist with outcomes and capabilities/features alignment
• Assist with product strategy for key proposition
• Assist with prioritization of Engineering Roadmap topics and their alignment with product priorities
