Job Summary

Reporting to the Project Director, the Project Manager is primarily responsible for supporting all project development activities related to planning and execution of the project scope directly under their management control and influence. The Project Manager is also responsible for working closely with Project Controls, Geoscience, Field Operations, SERA, and Technical Services functions for ensuring project management and control practices are established and performed effectively across the entire project including but not limited to: Overall project execution planning and organization; Work process set-up and initiation; Supporting scope definition of project baseline (scope, cost, and schedule); Selecting and managing service providers; Making and recording decisions based on cost, schedule, risk, and quality status; Reviewing and endorsing work outputs/deliverables; Management of change; Administering team resources: people (including SMEs), information, and assets; and closing the project stage and gathering learnings for the Next Stage Work Plan.

This position is based out of the Galore Creek Mining Corporation Head Office in Vancouver.

Located in northwestern British Columbia, Galore Creek is one of the world’s largest undeveloped porphyry copper-gold-silver deposits. Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values on health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners (Teck and Newmont). Provide leadership in the implementation and adherence to GCMC’s Health, Safety, Environmental, and Community (HSEC) policy. Takes a lead role in developing and ensuring a robust HSEC program and culture are embedded in all aspects of project development and execution.
  • As a senior leader in a multi-disciplinary project team, collaborate, influence, and manage project activities to unlock the value of the resource through strategic investments, and the advancement of development options. Provide senior-level leadership, technical input, and support for the Project Director on investment strategies to enhance asset value and mitigate risks on the asset, ensuring that commercial, operational, permitting, regulatory and implementation risks are identified, analyzed, prioritized and communicated, and that resulting strategic plans are developed and executed in a timely fashion.
  • Within the Project Management discipline help manage and/or contribute to: Development of resource plans and budgets ensuring resource requirements are achieved in order achieve project scope; Establishment of clear investment stage objectives, KPIs and critical success factors, and help keep the team focused on goals; Develop and maintain strong relationships with all project team members and all external partners (i.e. owners, contractors, COIs); and Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and value creation and develop a “learning organization” ensuring “lessons learned” and “better ways” are captured and implemented on the project as well as documenting them for future investment stages.
  • Work closely with the Project Director and broader Senior Project Leadership Team to develop the project execution strategy, which includes the optimum mix of consultants, contractors, and internal resources to successfully deliver the project objectives. In doing so, provide recommendations for the packaging of project elements to minimize costs/maximize value and best align with the project’s investment objectives.

Work closely with the Project Director and broader Senior Project Leadership Team to:

  • Develop the overall delivery of the project scope under management to the key success factors of safety, cost, schedule, and quality;
  • Develop a design that is fit-for-purpose, while promoting innovation, creative thinking where and when it benefits the project;
  • Provide guidance and technical direction in the development of design and construction standards in the project as well as maintaining the design and construction standards;
  • Coordinate and manage the work effort of multiple contractors, specialist contractors, and consultants;
  • Communicate evaluations and technical decisions to the Project Director and provide guidance on decision-making;
  • Develop plans for future ramp-up through a fit-for-purpose design, operational readiness planning, construction, and commissioning schedules;
  • Ensure all aspects of the project design, procurement, and construction planning meet industry and owner expectations of quality; and
  • Maintain focus and provide direction to the broader team on project priorities while ensuring the most efficient and cost-effective delivery methodology including Value Engineering.

Collaborate closely with the Project Director and Project Controls to:

  • Co-lead the development and management of the Project Execution Plan;
  • Apply the appropriate project management standards and procedures, with particular reference to Teck and Newmont’s Project Management standards, criteria, and requirements;
  • Provide direction to identify strengths, critical issues, and areas of risk/exposure in the execution of the project while ensuring risks are identified and mitigated based on best practices in risk management;
  • Maintain a ‘no surprises’ philosophy to communication through timely cost, schedule and scope change updates;
  • Develop and maintain open and effective communications within the broader project team members and with the Teck and Newmont governance structure (i.e. Management, Technical, SERA, and Finance Committees); and
  • Provide regular reporting on behalf of the Project Director, to the broader project team members and/or within the GCMC governance structure.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Mining, Mechanical, Civil Engineering, or relevant field;
  • Greater than 12 years of solid, progressive experience in major mining capital projects including greenfield developments, brownfield projects (i.e. expansion and/or extensions), and other major infrastructure investments (e.g. TMF, transportation and logistics);
  • Familiarity with relevant industry regulations and standards;
  • High level of attention to detail and commitment to quality;
  • Experience working in remote and complex mountainous terrain, ideally with direct experience working in NW British Columbia or the Yukon;
  • Sound understanding of mine development and operating best practices including HSEC management, resource development and planning, mining and waste management, processing, logistics, and regulatory matters including permitting and closure planning;
  • Advanced knowledge of mining organizational structures, typical resource requirements for executing strategic short-term and long-term development and operating plans;
  • High degree of comfort managing complex business problems;
  • Results oriented and adept at finding effective solutions;
  • Strong understanding of business drivers and use of business logic in economic assessments;
  • Proven ability to prioritize, work under pressure with minimal guidance to meet tight deadlines;
  • Recognized leader with strong organizational, planning, analytical, and decision-making skills;
  • Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal; and
  • Strong interpersonal skills and personal effectiveness; proven ability to influence.

$155,000 - $195,000 a year
