About the Role

The Northern Program Officer supports the development and implementation of Food Banks Canada’s Northern Strategy, supporting the Northern Program Manager in building relationships with food banks and other organizations to improve access to programs and advance long-term solutions to reduce hunger in Northern Canada. This role supports research into food insecurity in the North to inform Food Banks Canada’s advocacy and outreach efforts, and supports the planning, design, and execution of programs. The Northern Program Officer is responsible for tracking and sharing the impacts of Food Banks Canada’s Northern Strategy through various reports and presentations.

Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset for all our roles at Food Banks Canada as we support Canadians across the country.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Regularly support the convening of Northern food bankers to provide ongoing support for their work, and a forum for learning, sharing and advancing common goals
  • Support research into Northern food insecurity, including identifying and mapping stakeholders in governments, food security organizations, and community leaders to engage in programming and dialogue, and to map current community assets and needs
  • Support the northern advisory committee by facilitating quarterly meetings, supporting the community led development of goals for the committee
  • Work on adding northern organizations and hubs as official members of Food Banks Canada through an MOU signing strategy and prepare documents for signing
  • Support in conducting gap analyses, planning, executing and evaluating Food Banks Canada’s outreach and support efforts in the North
  • Keep minutes and records of meetings and engagement activities, track and compile reports on grants, food deliveries, and impact stories, and prepare presentations including photos and videos of community initiatives
  • As needed, travel throughout the Territories to promote and maintain positive relationships with community leaders, members, and relevant organizations working in food insecurity

What You Will Need

  • 4 years of relevant experience
  • Cultural and traditional awareness, or lived experience, of Northern communities
  • Completion of an undergraduate degree or equivalent in social sciences, communications, political sciences, humanities, social work, community development, indigenous studies, or education. A combination of education, training, and/or work experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing large projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Strong administrative skills, including data collection and entry, reporting, scheduling, and facilitating meetings
  • Experience working with volunteers, vulnerable populations, and community-based organizations
  • Bilingualism (English, an Indigenous language and/or French) is a strong asset

Working Conditions

  • Full-time, Monday-Friday, with occasional evening and weekend work. This position is home-based, with a preference for the candidate to live in Northern Canada
  • Travel within Canada (20%) is required
