Indigenous Instructional Designer

The Opportunity

The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of Treaty 7 which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina, and the Iyarhe Nakoda of Bearspaw, Chiniki and Goodstoney. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Moh’kinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary. The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Engagement, People & Culture for an Indigenous Instructional Designer. This role will be permanent-part-time and will work across the institution and support the campus community on the journey toward truth and reconciliation.

Indigenous Instructional Design is required to look at opportunities to Indigenize programs and curriculums, where applicable at SAIT and working in collaboration with the Centre for Applied Education and Innovation (CAIE).

SAIT is on a journey toward reconciliation and the decolonization and Indigenization of programs and curriculum addresses the Calls to Action for Education (6-12), Education for reconciliation (62-66) and CiCAN’s Indigenous Education Protocol.

The Role

• Engage with Schools, programs, faculty, and services, focusing on Indigenous Education in key areas: program design/development and redevelopment; curriculum design and pedagogy; teaching development; learning spaces; educational technologies; and flexible delivery
• Demonstrate a strong background in traditional, online, blended, and virtual learning and instruction, application of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning to the learning environment, integration of educational technology including learning management systems, and curriculum development and review for post-secondary programming
• Collaborate with the Director of Indigenous Engagement, the Centre for Applied Education Innovation (CAEI), the Centre for Academic Development & Innovation (CADI), Office of Academic Quality and faulty across SAIT schools on teaching and learning opportunities of mutual interest, including but not limited to: community engagement, programming for faculty, programming/curriculum development for students
• Contribute insights and recommendations during program/course design and during the development/refresh of curriculum
• Co-create learning design and development processes, resources, and tools to support quality assurance and continuous improvement
• Work as part of integrated and fast paced teams to create quality learning experiences and environments for all SAIT learners
• Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative leadership style
• Able to build and maintain relationships with individuals and groups at all levels of an organization
• Excellent project management, organizational and time management skills. Able to manage multiple, diverse projects simultaneously

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Indigenous Education, Adult Education / Learning Design or Master’s Degree and related experience

• Demonstrated knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, Treaties, Crown-Indigenous Relations (First Nation ,Métis and Inuit)

• Experience working with Alberta First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities and organizations

• Demonstrated expertise in: program development and redevelopment, curriculum design and pedagogy, flexible learning, teaching development, learning spaces, and educational technologies focused on Indigenous Education

• Curriculum development and teaching experience at a post-secondary level

• Demonstrated application of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

• Demonstrated ability to work within a collaborative team-based context

• Commitment to continuous learning and reflective practice

• Knowledge and Skills Required

• Knowledge of a First Nation language with preference to Treaty 7 (Blackfoot, Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’ina)

• Strong understanding of and positive attitude toward Indigenous population

• Knowledge of barriers affecting access to post-secondary education for Indigenous students

• Ability to maintain high-level of transparency, confidentiality and professionalism with SAIT students and staff
