What's the role?

We are seeking a hardworking Senior Systems Software Engineer at Northwestern Mutual who will play a pivotal role in the Cloud Enablement team, working at the core of Northwestern Mutual's Cloud Paradigm. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the success of high-priority efforts for the company by providing consulting services and technical expertise. You will work closely with engineering teams to empower them in delivering and maintaining high-quality cloud applications using standard cloud patterns and best practices.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with development teams to apply automation patterns and optimize their use of Northwestern Mutual's cloud platform, built on AWS
  • Act as the main point of contact for teams onboarding to the cloud, providing guidance and support from a Cloud & DevOps perspective
  • Partner with other enterprise teams, leveraging industry and enterprise best practices to design and implement efficient and scalable solutions
  • Continuously improve patterns and workflows based on feedback from development teams and industry advancements
  • Proactively learn and stay updated on emerging platforms and related technologies, ensuring the team is up-to-date with the latest trends
  • Solve complex technical issues and provide coaching and mentorship to enable engineering teams to become self-sufficient
  • Provide thought leadership and contribute to the team's growth and success
  • Contribute to internal tooling that improves the experience of the cloud platform
  • Contribute to our Cloud & DevOps Learning platform that provides hands-on labs that are utilized to upskill the organization

Bring you best! What this role needs?

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of professional IT experience in a highly regulated and complex environment, with a diverse skill set spanning infrastructure, databases, security, software development, networking, and application architecture
  • 5+ years experience writing code in JavaScript/Typescript or Python. Experience with React is a plus
  • 5+ years experience with Linux and Windows, including installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Comfortable with CLI
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with AWS. AWS Associate or Professional level certifications, or the ability and interest to acquire them, will be necessary
  • Strong experience with integration of n-tier applications, including REST, DNS, HTTP, SSL, encryption, authentication, and load balancing
  • Proficient with CI/CD concepts and tools such as GitLab, testing methodologies, change management, blue/green & canary deployments, and infrastructure as code
  • Creative problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical challenges
  • Deep passion for helping others succeed and a proven ability to coach and mentor
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to provide thought leadership within the team and work effectively across the organization
  • Familiarity with Agile methodologies and working in a DevOps environment
  • Strong sense of ownership and the ability to work with a limited set of requirements
  • Ability to explain technical solutions to technical teams and non-technical teams

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$100,030.00

Pay Range - End:

$185,770.00

Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
