Position Summary:

Continuous Improvement – Major Capital Projects- Process Project Engineer
This position reports to the Major Capital Projects Continuous Improvement Supervisor and supports relief and flare system design.

Marathon Petroleum Company is in search of a highly motivated process engineer to support relief and flare systems for the Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, Texas.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the GBR relief and flare system Process Safety Information. Provide oversight and guidance for the work processes that govern design, modification, and documentation. Maintain GBR relief and flare documentation evergreen.
  • Responsible for refinery flare system hydraulic evaluations and flare flexibility requests during flare outages.
  • Support refinery projects on relief and flare evaluations.
  • Support Tech Service engineers on process unit rate increase evaluations to include identifying rate dependent relief valves and reviewing flare header hydraulics.
  • Provide relief and flare system expertise to Incident Investigations, PHAs, Audits, and MOCs as needed.
  • Develop relief systems TAR scope and work scope additions (WSA) as needed.
  • Assist unit engineers on Turnaround and as-found relief system findings.
  • Assist Inspection with technical information when ordering relief valves for routine maintenance.
  • Interface with the Tank TAR team to identify relief scope changes for tanks based on the 25-year TAR schedule.
  • Manage and maintain the relief systems database to include work processes, audits, and incorporating best practices.
  • Manage relief systems deficiencies to include closing recommendations, initiating new recommendations, determining risk rankings, and submitting project request forms.
  • Pursues efficiencies on projects to ensure adequate overpressure protection through appropriate design and identify alternative solutions when necessary.
  • Interface with the area teams and technologists ensure project related technical and operating issues are addressed.
  • Train and mentor Tech Services, Operations, Engineering, Maintenance, and PSM on relief and flare systems best practices and use of the relief systems database.
  • Coordinate with outside relief systems consultants to ensure relief and flare evaluations are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Develop project justification and submittals for annual capital budget.
  • Effectively communicate opportunities to affected Area Teams and refinery leadership.
  • Travel for training, professional development, and meetings with engineering contractors as needed. [ 10%

Education and Experience:

  • Education Level: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Chemical Engineering required. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)
  • Relevant Experience Level: 4+ years of relevant industry experience as process, controls, or projects engineer.
  • Proficiencies: Strong refinery process knowledge, and a basic understanding of refinery economics and project justification. Prior experience with relief and flare systems and knowledge of Marathon Refinery Standard Practices, Core Specifications, and Industry standards is a plus.
  • The successful candidate will be proficient in the following competencies: Technical Professional Knowledge & Skills, Critical Thinking, Drive for Results, Managing Priorities, Adaptability, Communication, and Innovation.
  • A valid Driver’s license is required.
