Your responsibilities
If you are a mechatronics or robotics engineer willing to work on both hardware (design, construction, electronics, testing) and software (navigation, trajectory generation, sensor acquisition, motor configuration and testing), this position is for!
Within the Beams department (BE) the Controls Electronics and Mechatronics (CEM) group is responsible for the research, development and operations of a fleet of robotics systems used for inspection, maintenance and repair tasks.
Such systems require complex systems engineering to ensure their operation readiness, including aspects from motor configuration, electrical connections, battery status, network configuration, onboard computers, onboard software and the user interface.
At CERN, robotic platforms are used regularly for inspection, maintenance and repair tasks. A new robot prototype has recently been built and it will be used to perform regular radiation protection surveys and punctual inspection and possibly repair tasks.
As a Robotic Control Engineer, you will:
- Update the robot hardware;
- Increase the functionality to perform autonomous surveys along paths in unknown environments, as well as adaptive surveys of arm trajectories to follow complex shapes;
- Adapt the algorithms to other platforms in other accelerators at CERN
This position suits a mechatronics or robotics engineer willing to work on both hardware (design, construction, electronics, testing) and software (navigation, trajectory generation, sensor acquisition, motor configuration and testing). "
Your profile
Skills and/or knowledge
- Experience working with C++;
- Knowledge of motor drivers and configuration;
- Experience with mechatronics design;
- Knowledge of cameras and LIDAR acquisition;
- Theoretical understanding of common algorithms used for navigation e.g. SLAM Theoretical understanding of common algorithms used for path planning and trajectory generation;
- Experience with CI/CD tools such as Gitlab;
- Detail oriented and willing to be very hands on for building, testing, prototyping and operational settings;
- Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.
Eligibility criteria:
- You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- You have a professional background in Mechatronics or Robotics Engineering (or a related field) and have either:
- a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
- or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
- You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
