Shoreline, the industry leader in intelligent SaaS solutions for wind energy, is looking for a fully remote DevOps engineer to manage and improve our AWS and CI/CD infrastructure.

As part of our Design & Platform Team, you’ll work closely with the development and QA engineers who build our SaaS platform. You will take the lead on operating, refactoring and scaling our cloud infrastructure, improving its resilience, and optimising our running costs. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Architecture Development – operate and optimize a cost-efficient and scalable cloud infrastructure
  • Infrastructure as Code - migrate the parts of our infrastructure to IaC and maintain it
  • Release Management – improve our CI/CD pipeline and make releasing as automated and frictionless as possible
  • Security and Surveillance - be a part of ensuring compliance with Customer SLAs/reporting, GDPR and Security standards. Having a holistic architecture mindset is key for us. Our DevOps Engineer will be key to a stable and reliable architecture and cloud platform, but at the same time having an understanding of the developers’ world in order to find the balance between the customer's needs for reliability and for innovation. As the ideal candidate you have at least 3 years experience with building cloud infrastructure and have practical experience with:
  • AWS infrastructure and networking (including AWS load balancing and AWS Network Firewall)
  • Orchestration and scaling using AWS ECS and Docker images
  • Migration from individually managed EC2 instances to ECS clustering
  • Infrastructure as Code eg with AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK)
  • CI/CD pipelines, eg using Github Actions and AWS CodeDeploy
  • Multi-region deployment
  • Risk management and mitigation
  • End-to-end testing and release governance automation
  • Cost optimization in AWS
  • Cloud security and compliance (e.g. SOC 2 or ISO 27001) It is likely that you will already have one or more AWS Certifications.
  • The opportunity to become a member of a fast-growing and venture-backed company with a tremendous global potential, where your contribution will make a significant difference
  • An international work environment with a team of knowledgeable and dedicated people that together create amazing services and software for our customers
  • A work environment focused on empowerment, happiness, autonomy, and results
  • A position where you are welcome and encouraged to provide feedback to help shape our platform and product
  • A remuneration package matching your qualifications and current market conditions
  • A healthy work-life balance, working fully remote in the CET time zone Founded in Scandinavia, Shoreline has employees distributed across multiple locations in the European time-zones, including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Norway, Poland, Sweden and the UK. We have offices Denmark and Norway, but people in other countries work 100% remote, and most of our teams have members in several different locations. Video meetings, Slack chat and other remote collaboration are the norm. In larger meetings, office-based folks use the Meeting Owl ([https://owllabs.com/products/meeting-owl-3>). Our employees come from many countries and cultures. You will hear a variety of languages in the offices or at company get-togethers, but English is the lingua franca and is the official working language of the company.

Core working hours across the company are 8am-4pm CET (so, eg, 7am-3pm in UK, Ireland and Portugal; 9am-5pm in Finland, Estonia, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and elsewhere in EEST). We also have our share of urgent all-hands-on-deck issues.

We have two SaaS products:

  • an established market-leading “Design” tool for simulating and optimising the design, location and build of a new wind farm (including optimising the setup for maintenance of over the windfarm’s expected 30 year life-time);
  • a newer set of “Execution” tools for planning and management of wind farm maintenance and repair.

Our tech stack has evolved over time. There are currently a few different JavaScript frameworks on the front-end, though we are moving towards Angular across the board for web front end and React for mobile front end. Broadly, the back-end is currently JavaScript (Node.js) for the “Execution” product and Java (Spring Boot) for the “Design” product (which includes the “Shoresim” simulation engine). The data layer is MongoDB and MariaDB, though we are gradually migrating more towards the latter. Everything runs in AWS (currently Docker images on EC2 instances, but we want to move to ECS). We have a mixture of shared and per-customer environments.

Although we don’t have the same scalability challenges as some B2C businesses, our clients process sizeable amounts of data through our system. They also operate around the globe and around the clock. The wind farms they are building and operating are large complex weather-dependent projects, each representing many hundreds of millions of dollars of investment. The efficiency improvements our software brings to the planning and operation of wind farms (both offshore and on shore) are hugely valuable. Availability of our SaaS platform, along with its speed and the accuracy of its outputs, are mission critical to them. This means we care a lot about getting things right, and we put significant effort into code quality, automated testing and process refinement. At the same time, we have a large scope of features yet to create to fully serve the industry. Juggling between all the competing priorities can be hard, and we aren’t always exactly where we want to be, but most people on the team would say we are moving in the right direction.

There is a fair amount to learn to get up to speed with the offshore wind industry, but a lot of what our customers do is quite interesting to someone with an “engineering” mindset, and there is significant satisfaction to being involved in the creation and operation of new sources of clean energy. If you would like to know more about the position, please reach out to Head of Engineering Dennis Mølholm Hansen at molholm@shoreline.no

We are working purposefully to find the right candidate for this position and job interviews are held on an ongoing basis, so please do not hesitate to apply for the position.
