Mō te tūranga | About the Role

As a Platform Engineer for Westpac, you will help engineers be successful developing platforms. Your role plays an important part in the development and maintenance of technical solutions across Westpac enterprise compute environments – such as on-premises and cloud and helps develop tooling and software to enable the orchestration and automation of maintaining VM workloads across platforms.

You will be required to work across the chapter, sharing knowledge and driving improvement across the craft of Platform Engineering.

Key Responsibilities include.

  • Provide technical expertise to Enterprise Compute and Storage teams, covering all aspects of the cloud within a specific service or pattern.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the service and platform throughout their lifecycle.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding and a high level of experience with DevOps, CI/CD, SecOps, test driven development (TDD) and other high maturity practices
  • Evaluate and provide diagnosis and resolution of complex service (cross infrastructure/application) issues that may arise during the cloud life cycle to ensure effective development, maintenance and support of patterns and platform
  • Identify and facilitate the resolution of design decisions and issues through the solution design and delivery phases to ensure timely identification and resolution of design issues and decisions

  • Demonstrable experience in applying DevOps/SRE principles/practices and tooling to deliver automation across one or more cloud platforms private VMWare-based infrastructure and public cloud.

  • Development experience in one or more programming or scripting languages – JavaScript (NodeJS), PowerShell, Python, Go, BASH, Ruby, Rust etc.

  • Experience with provisioning automation tools (e.g. Terraform, vRealize Automation/Orchestrator, CloudFormation, Azure Resource Manager etc), Configuration Management tools (e.g. Chef, Ansible) and tools for building Images/Templates (e.g. Packer).

  • Exposure to modern application architectures such as Microservices and experience with technology that supports them (e.g. Kubernetes/Containers)

  • Solid understanding of network principles including TCP/IP, VLANs and overlays, Firewalling and Routing.

  • Strong communication skills with an emphasis on writing well-structured technical documentation.

  • Advanced analysis, problem solving, troubleshooting and consultative skills.

  • Experience in Agile methodologies with good understanding and working knowledge of Scrum, Kanban, extreme programming (XP), Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), test driven development (TDD), customer centric design, and behaviour driven development (BDD)

  • Demonstrable ability in analysis, problem solving and troubleshooting in a hybrid cloud environment (on-prem, offsite, and public) and across multiple consumption models (IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS).
