**Purpose:**Dedicated to enhancing patient experiences across all phases of clinical trials, the Patient Engagement organization boasts an advanced internal Health Literacy capability. This innovative team specializes in crafting engaging patient-centric clinical trial communications and materials in multiple media formats spanning patient education, recruitment, retention, and executing comprehensive health literacy strategies.

Position Description: The Associate Director (P4), Health Literacy is a strategic position responsible for shaping the health literate content strategy. With a therapeutic area focus and accountability, this role collaborates closely with therapeutically assigned Patient Engagement, Senior Directors, in support of the overarching patient engagement strategy for the clinical portfolio. Working closely with the Health Literacy Capabilities Content team, this role spearheads tailored development and execution of patient-centric clinical trial communications. The Associate Director works with the internal Patient Engagement Graphic Design and Animation teams to ensure content is inclusive and culturally sensitive, addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations. They collaborate closely with therapeutically assigned Senior Directors to integrate DEI principles into the overarching patient engagement strategy, particularly focusing on enabling broader recruitment and retention of patients across our clinical trial portfolio. This entails developing appropriate content tailored to underserved populations and harder-to-reach patients, ensuring their needs are addressed effectively.

The Associate Director leads efforts to create materials that resonate with diverse communities, fostering trust and engagement thereby promoting equitable access to clinical trials and enhancing the overall patient experience.

With an unwavering dedication to continuous improvement, the Associate Director ensures seamless collaboration with both internal Patient Engagement and cross-functional partners. This includes partnership with multiple cross-functional stakeholders with the primary goal to uphold excellence in delivering clear, impactful, and compliant patient-facing communications for our clinical trials, all while optimizing quality, efficiency, and value.

Patient Engagement Health Literacy Strategy and Delivery

  • Develop and oversee the overarching health literacy strategy for investigator and patient-facing content within the clinical trial portfolio, aligning with therapeutic area needs, organizational goals and regulatory requirements.

  • Collaborate within Patient Engagement and with cross-functional teams to identify key priorities and ensure alignment of health literacy initiatives with broader clinical trial objectives.

  • Lead the development and implementation of guidelines and maintaining standards for health literate content creation, ensuring consistency and adherence to best practices.

  • Conduct thorough assessments of investigator and patient communication needs, incorporating feedback from data analysis and behavioral science team work to inform strategy development.

  • Stay abreast of evolving health literacy trends, regulations, and industry best practices, integrating new insights into strategy refinement.

  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to leverage expertise in health literacy principles, content creation, and communication strategies.

  • Provide guidance and direction to content creators, ensuring that all materials are developed in a clear, understandable, and culturally sensitive manner.

  • Support the evaluation of effectiveness of health literate content the activities of the data and behavioral science capabilities, enabling data-driven adjustments as needed.

  • Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles in all aspects of health literacy strategy, with a focus on reaching underserved populations and improving access to clinical trial information.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on health literacy matters, providing training and support to internal teams and external partners as needed.

  • Collaborate with regulatory affairs and compliance teams to ensure that all health literate content meets regulatory requirements and industry standards.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the quality, efficiency, and impact of health literate content across clinical trial communications.

  • Act as a key liaison with external vendors, agencies, and research partners to ensure alignment with health literacy strategy and objectives.

  • Lead cross-functional working groups or committees focused on advancing health literacy initiatives and promoting knowledge sharing within the organization.

  • Prepare and present reports on health literacy strategy implementation, outcomes, and recommendations to senior leadership and relevant stakeholders.

People Management Support and Development

  • Facilitate the cultivation of a strategically adept and operationally proficient HLC team equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for developing industry best health literate content.
  • Advocate for the cultivation of an agile organizational framework capable of consistently adapting to the evolving demands of our portfolio.
  • Promote and embody a culture of change, encouraging resilience and adaptability among team members.
  • Support an organizational environment that prioritizes inclusivity and encourages innovative thinking.
  • Collaborate in nurturing a team that demonstrates proficiency in health literacy, clinical trial patient-facing engagement (including retention, education, and recruitment), drug development, therapeutic area science, strategic planning, project management, and cross-functional leadership.
  • Support the organizations people leaders in training new hires, ensuring a smooth transition into the team.
  • Apply situational leadership skills to optimize communication within the internal team and across various cross-functional partners.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in health, science or communication-related field

  • Minimum 5 year’s experience medical writing, clinical development or consumer writing experience

  • Minimum 2 year’s experience leading/managing a key part of portfolio or business process

  • Experience leading others, including relationship and team building, setting expectations, holding others accountable, and technical coaching.

  • Experience in health literacy methodology as an evidence-based practice in communications regarding clinical trials

  • Possess prior health literacy specific experiences
  • Possess prior communication-related team experience
  • Highly proficient in presentation software such as PowerPoint, Adobe, etc.
  • Ability to be a flexible team player, comfortable working in times of ambiguity
  • Strong knowledge of the creation and delivery of healthcare communication plans (i.e. creation of OCM plans, etc)
  • Ability to work swiftly and independently in a highly matrixed, deadline-driven environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of how health literate content can benefit a clinical trial experience
  • Experience working with health literacy or media vendor/agency structures and processes
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of Medical, Legal and Regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tactic types and associated requirements
  • Successful track record of leading without authority
  • Exhibit knowledge of healthcare environment and regulated industry practices
  • Demonstrate ability to partner effectively across functions by cultivating a strong network of cross-functional colleagues
