About The Job

Help customers with technical operating issues by carrying out troubleshooting and field service requests submitted through the International Marine Service Desk. The International Service Engineers for Heat & Gas Systems will provide technical support for the Alfa Laval Boiler System.

Job Description

  • Execute international and local field service within BGS’s 360 service portfolio that are received through the International Marine Service Desk.
  • Pick up and bring bookings, VISAs, permits, spare parts, equipment etc. needed to perform the field services.
  • Diagnose, solve and report solutions and improvements on board of vessels to definitively solve the customer’s problem even when third party equipment or installations are involved.
  • Perform troubleshooting with full autonomy on board of vessels in the requested port, and if needed, sail with a vessel until the problem is solved (e.g. for on the job training on niche products both for customers and service engineers).
  • Provide qualified service on customers’ boilers, burners, control systems and matching equipment.
  • Change components, mount new burners and control systems, upgrade equipment and control systems, perform re-commissioning, perform safety checks and combustion adjustments, and advice and coach customers and crew in product usage.
  • Execute Performance Audits.
  • Consult Global Technical Specilalists before, during and after the field service (as needed).
  • Get central help proactively and use the ISE network, and then report the findings to keep colleagues informed.
  • Develop and build relationship with customers and crews.
  • Produce service reports and document performed field service as per guidelines.
  • Review SOPs and assist in creating new SOPs.
  • Work together with other International Marine Service team members as a team, and act as a technical support backup to Global Technical Specialists and Global Coordinators if so required.
  • Work on a flexible schedule, including weekdays, weekends, and after-hours.
  • Travel extensively to execute marine service jobs, participate in trainings, team meetings etc., primarily in the own region (Americas, EMEA or Asia) but also globally as needed.
  • Strong commitment to safety protocols and regulations.

  • Make the customer realise its needs regarding features, benefits and values in order to match and explain the features, advantages, benefits and values of Alfa Laval products, applications and service offerings.
  • Apply expert knowledge related to marine products and applications in complex and unknown situations.
  • Educate other service engineers in formal situations like classroom trainings, coaching etc.
  • Coach colleagues by translating complex issues into easy to understand terms.
  • Perform, troubleshooting and realise performance audits of marine products and applications within Boiler & Gas System (BGS).
  • Have a good understanding of PLC and Control systems, as well as operation and maintenance of boilers, burners, equipment and control systems.
  • Expertise in burner troubleshooting, including combustion, water level regulation, pumps, and data communication.
  • Capable of replacing and upgrading CPU, HMI, UNIAB, and PLC.
  • Extensive knowledge of PID controllers, timers, amplifiers, and field instruments.
  • Preferred experience with calibration of control valves and pneumatic instruments.

What You Know

  • High school diploma or higher, bachelor’s degree or similar in Marine Engineering a plus.
  • 5+ years field service experience on board vessels familiarity with industry regulations and standards, as well as marine mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Fluent in English, both verbal and written.
  • Good cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Experience from working in an international context and across borders with colleagues and customers from other cultures.
  • Good reporting skills. (using MS Word and Excel)
  • Experience of working in CRM systems and planning tools.
  • Understanding of marine boilers, steam systems with electrical and automation knowledge (minimum boiler controllers).
