The role with us

As a Health and Safety Specialist you play an essential role in advising the Telstra Group on the management of SSW risks, with a focus on Infrastructure. You thrive on leveraging your passion, technical knowledge and experience in health, safety, environment, and wellbeing to inform decision making, contribute to the development and drive the implementation of key policies, frameworks and programs that enable the business to safely and sustainably achieve its objectives.

Through your excellent communication, collaboration and stakeholder engagement skills you will play a pivotal role in driving a culture that promotes health, safety and sustainability at the heart of everything we do across the Telstra Group.

Key responsibilities include:

• Partner with the business, build trusted relationships and influence decision making to support a strong focus on SSW.
• Support your stakeholders to understand their operational SSW risks and obligations for the infrastructure work environment and help drive a positive SSW culture.
• Provide insights and reporting to enable functional and cross-functional risk management and oversight.
• Work collaboratively across work environments/workstreams to ensure all relevant risks are identified and consistently understood and addressed.
• Contribute to the ongoing development and maintenance of the Telstra Group infrastructure work environment risk profile and agreed controls necessary to manage our SSW risk within agreed risk appetite.
• Participate in the development, delivery and ongoing improvement of risk management, awareness programs and strategies through cross-functional and functional working groups.
• Interpret key legislation and regulatory obligations to guide the development and implementation of safe work practices.
• Facilitate and/or conduct risk assessments and the development of controls, including safe work method statements.
• Assist the SSW Assurance team with the planning and execution of Infrastructure related SSW second line audits.
• Partner with the Support & Recovery teams to support the early intervention strategy and associated programs to achieve safe and sustainable return to work.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Demonstrated experience as a HSWE specialist/advisor, preferably working in a high-risk industry
• Experience facilitating risk assessments and the maintenance of risk profiles for business units
• A high-level understanding of HSWE management systems and risk management principles
• Proven ability to work independently and to handle multiple or competing priorities
• Sound knowledge of, and experience managing to health, safety and environment standards and regulations
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships and influence across the organisation
• Superior communication (written and verbal), coaching, interpersonal and presentation skills
• Experience in HSWE data reporting (essential)
• Hold tertiary qualifications (essential)
• Lead Auditor qualification and experience in the planning and undertaking of audits (highly desirable)
