Your responsibilities

Survey Engineers at CERN have the task to position the elements of accelerators and detectors to sub-millimeter precision, including those of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider).

Starting in 2026, the High-Luminosity LHC project aims to significantly enhance the performance of the LHC, increasing its potential for groundbreaking discoveries. This project involves aligning accelerator components with a precision of a few tens of microns on the 200 meters Long Straight Sections of machine before ATLAS and CMS detectors.

A crucial component of this project is the crab cavity, designed to tilt particles before collision to maximize overlap at the collision point. Sixteen crab cavities will be assembled into eight cryomodules (two per cryomodule) and tested before installation in the LHC tunnel in 2028. Assembly and testing of these cryomodules will be distributed across CERN, the UK, and Canada.

As a Survey Engineer in the HL-LHC project, your responsibilities will be:

  • First Cryomodule Assembly: Assist in the assembly of the first cryomodule at CERN, including initial observation and training.
  • International Collaboration: Engage with responsible teams in the UK and Canada, primarily via Zoom, to coordinate survey activities and ensure alignment precision.
  • On-site Support: Provide dedicated measurement support in the UK and Canada as needed.
  • Testing Oversight: Oversee all reception tests and cold tests at CERN to ensure compliance with alignment specifications.
  • Installation Participation: Actively participate in the installation of crab cavities in the LHC tunnel.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

  • Experience in high-precision alignment and measurement;
  • Proficiency with survey equipment and software;
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with international teams;
  • Ability to travel to the UK and Canada as required.
  • Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

  • You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • You have a professional background in Surveying, Geomatics (or a related field) and have either:
    • a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
    • or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.
  • You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
