The successful candidate will join the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC)-Genomics Shared Resources (GSR) Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) team and serve as Technical Director, overseeing a range of cutting-edge services offered in support of OSU CCC researchers and other University and external clients (more than 300 scientists annually).

The GSR aids in the mission of the OSUCCC to “create-a cancer-free world, one person, one discovery at a time” and supports cutting-edge research by providing variety of high-throughput genomics technologies to top-tier researchers, primarily members from the five different OSUCCC cancer programs.

Primary activities of the director within GSR includes constructing NGS libraries, coordinating sequencing runs, advising clients throughout the lifecycle of NGS experiments (including: bulk, ultralow, and single cell analyses using fresh and archival samples; genomic, transcriptomic, metagenomic, epigenomic, and spatial assays of human, research model, plant, and microbial genomes), and post-alignment QC, organization, and distribution of large datasets.

The GSR Technical Director will supervise the execution of workflows by GSR team members, work with clients and vendor technical support personnel to identify the best technology for project goals and ensure production of high quality datasets, assess new technologies for future service offerings, evaluate and optimize established GSR protocols and develop new protocols in accordance with new services, accurately document project information and lab activities, ensure proper handling of samples and materials within the lab, and perform critical analyses supporting NGS–related publications. The position requires the ability to manage and coordinate tasks across multiple projects on a daily basis, ensuring their timely and successful completion.

Additional opportunities include conducting lectures and lab tours for undergraduate and graduate NGS–related classes, speaking to GSR tour groups and potential donors, meeting with faculty candidates and new faculty members, and assisting in preparation of grant proposals.

The Technical Director will also oversee day-to-day fiscal responsibilities such as providing price quotes for service orders; train new GSR staff members, facilitate procurement of new cutting-edge NGS equipment; provide technical assistance and supervision for instrumentation, negotiate and oversee service contracts and repairs, and communicate and work with other GSR non-NGS team-members in a professional manner.

Education/Experience:

  • A Doctoral degree (PhD) in genetics, genomics or other related field with a minimum 7-10 years of relevant experience required.
  • Hands-on experience preparing and sequencing of a variety of NGS library types required (e.g. RNA-seq, smRNA-seq, single-cell sequencing, methyl-seq, meta-transcriptomics, targeted DNA sequencing, and whole exome and genome libraries).
  • Demonstrated experience with single cell RNA sequencing library (e.g. 10X) construction preferred. Experience with RNA/DNA isolation, quantification, RT-PCR, and quality control (e.g. BioAnalyzer/TapeStation) required.
  • Experience with omics data tools such as Ingenuity Pathway Analysis and UCSC Genome Browser, and ability to interact productively with bioinformatics/biostatistics colleagues preferred.
  • Experience with high-performance compute systems, such as the Ohio Supercomputing Center, are desired.
  • The applicant should be highly motivated, organized, and show the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment, should communicate effectively (both written and oral) and be able to work with clients across a range of experiences and disciplines.
  • They must demonstrate strong project management skills and be able to multi-task, prioritize, and manage multiple projects simultaneously, and have exceptional problem-solving skills.
  • Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.
