Collins is seeking an experienced Senior Reliability, Maintainability and Safety (RMS) Engineer to join our Avionics Business Unit RMS Engineering team. Our work supports the development of innovative aviation electronic solutions, specifically aircraft related environmental sensors, for one of the world’s leading Aerospace companies. Candidates are required to have excellent communication skills to convey technical issues and status in both written and oral form to internal and external customers. Our charter is to promote the system safety, reliability and maintainability of the design of Avionics systems and products by providing engineers that are specifically trained and knowledgeable in Reliability, Maintainability, and System Safety methods and processes.

What You Will Do:

  • The individual will be a member of our RMS Engineering Team, which supports Air Transport, Business, Regional and Military aircraft products and programs.
  • Provide Reliability Engineering leadership by mentoring junior engineers, advising product development teams, developing and implementing reliability engineering processes within the Avionics business unit, and participating in companywide reliability initiatives.
  • Support bid and proposal activities for military and commercial avionics programs.
  • Performing Reliability Assessments, which includes performing reliability predictions to establish MTBF estimates and component failure rates. These analyses utilize the 217Plus methodology and include utilizing field performance of similar equipment when applicable to increase accuracy of the assessment.
  • Perform Derating Analysis, Failure Modes & Effects Analyses (FMEAs), High Intensity Radiation Fields (HIRF) and Lightning analysis, Testability analysis and Maintainability Assessments.
  • Perform civil safety assessment process in accordance with ARP4761 [or military assessments in accordance with MIL-STD-882E], including, but not limited to, the following:
    • System Safety Program Plans (SSPPs), Functional Hazard Assessments (FHAs) [or Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA)], Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSAs) [or Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SSHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA)], System Safety Assessments (SSAs) [or Safety Assessment Report (SAR)], Fault Tree Analyses (FTAs), Common Mode Analyses (CMAs)
  • Support systems, hardware, and software engineering teams in defining system safety requirements during development activity.
  • Review of design and development documentation for safety critical equipment.
  • Review analysis of peer safety and reliability engineers.
  • Mentor and train less experienced engineers.
  • Accountable to team members and organizational leadership for committed work and responsibilities.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in assigned areas (program, function, process, technology).
  • Collaborate with customers, stakeholders, and organizational leaders to develop plans.
  • Recognized technical expert in RMS.

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract
  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of aircraft or electronic systems.
  • Knowledge of ARP4761 and Mil-Std 882E, basic knowledge of ARP4754A, DO254, DO-178B/C, DO-297.
  • Experience and knowledge in any of the RMS engineering domains, including processes and procedures.
  • Effective interpersonal and team skills. Experience preparing and presenting technical information to peers, to all levels of internal management, and to external customers
  • Knowledge on how to coordinate several projects and complex engineering activities while balancing priorities and schedules, engaging in effective time management, working with a great deal of independence.

Qualification We Prefer:

  • Familiarity with reliability test such as Accelerated Stress Testing (AST) and Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) would be a bonus
  • Familiarity with performing Neutron Single Event Upset susceptibility analyses would be a bonus
  • Experience with 217Plus or similar for Reliability analysis.
  • Experience with CAFTA or similar Fault Tree analysis tools

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
