*This role is hybrid where you will be expected to be in the office 1-3 times a week in their Barrie, Ontario location*.

As the team lead and Controller, you will oversee the operational aspects of the financial management of the brokerage, including accounting practices, budgeting, financial planning, and risk management. This position requires a detail-oriented individual with strong analytical skills and the ability to effectively communicate financial concepts to non-financial managers.

Financial Management and Reporting:

- Oversee the preparation of all financial reports, including income statements, balance sheets, reports to shareholders, tax returns, and reports for government regulatory agencies.

- Ensure accurate and timely financial and analytical reports for senior management decision-making.

Budget Management and Cost Control:

- Manage the annual budget process, providing financial modelling and analysis to optimize costs and improve profitability.

- Collaborate with department heads to prepare budgets and monitor departmental spending.

Cash Flow Management:

- Manage cash flow and forecasting; develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs.

- Optimize and manage the mechanisms for effective cash management and liquidity.

Internal Controls and Compliance:

- Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and budgets and actual expenditures.

- Regularly review accounting and financial processes for compliance and system improvements.

Audit and Risk Management:

- Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit.

- Implement and oversee risk management policies and procedures to mitigate financial risks.

Leadership and Team Development:

- Supervise and lead the accounting and finance team to achieve departmental goals.

- Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.

Regulatory Knowledge and Relationships:

- Stay informed about industry changes in financial regulations and legislation that affect the organization’s operations.

- Maintain relationships with external auditors, banks, and other financial institutions.

Technology Proficiency:

- Ensure the accounting systems and software are utilized effectively, maintaining current knowledge of technology updates for potential adoption.

- Lead initiatives to utilize technology in streamlining accounting processes.

Communication Skills:

- Articulate financial information clearly to management and other departments, ensuring they understand the financial perspective in decision making.

- Assist department heads in financial understanding and budget control.

Special Projects - Software Transition:

- Play a pivotal role in selecting and transitioning to a new accounting software system, moving away from QuickBooks Desktop.

- Lead the evaluation of potential new software solutions, ensuring alignment with the brokerage’s operational needs and strategic goals.

- Spearhead the implementation and integration of the chosen system, coordinating with IT and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as a Controller or similar role, preferably in the real estate industry or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a relevant discipline; CPA designation is highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting and experience with accounting software and databases.
  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize in a fast-moving environment.
