The role of Platform Engineers is to Design, Build, Run & Evolve tools, infrastructure, templates and capabilities that our other engineers use to deliver business value, and to write code that automates running our infrastructure and environments. Collaboratively work with customer facing product engineers to design, build and run ‘platforms’ that they can use to deliver customer value at greater quality, velocity, and safety. • As a Principal Platform Engineer, are familiar with the Full Cycle model, where engineers are involved in Design, Build, Challenge and Run
• Have a passion for designing, developing, deploying and running high quality software and platforms.
• Contributes to a culture where quality, inclusiveness and excellence are championed.
• Have a natural drive to educate, communicate and positively influence various stakeholder groups including high level executives.
• Can coach & mentor engineers, share knowledge to uplift and improve software development practices.

Requirements of the role:

• Collaboratively work with customer facing product engineers to design, build and run Platforms that they can use to deliver customer value at greater quality, velocity, and safety.
• Treat Platforms as products, actively working with the consumers to make the platforms better, ensuring that our platforms are loved by our software engineers, and continually evolving our platforms to embrace new technology and improve the happiness and efficiency of our software engineers.
• Show thought leadership across one or more platforms, actively engaging across the group to drive better quality engineering into the platform.
• Write software and tooling that automates the operations of our platforms, infrastructure, environments, and tooling.
• Create a standardised set of tooling for deploying and running applications and setting them up with best practices
• Maintain the underlying infrastructure to ensure the that it is reliable, secure and scalable
• Help software engineers to experiment with new potential platforms follow our standards, and when platforms become suitable for broader use, consider integrating it as a standard group-wide tool.
• Make all platforms entirely self-service, secure, and available within minutes without human approval.
• Write software to ensure that all deployment and operations is as automated as possible, using languages such as python and go, and automate implementation of controls into our platforms.
• Provide advice and guidance to platform teams on how to improve their scalability, test automation, and deployment automation.
• Participate in cross-group activities to build a culture of one team, bar-raising both our engineering capability and our technology solutions to drive our strategy.

Tech Skills:

We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don’t expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team;

Essential:

• Expert experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining CI/CD tools (Preferred: GitHub Actions, ArgoCD.)
• Expert experience in Scripting/programming languages (i.e., C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, Python)
• Extensive experience with containerisation, virtualisation, and orchestration technologies - Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, EKS etc.
• Extensive experience in DevSecOps processes and best practices Develop, deploy & manage platform services via Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, AWS CDK & CloudFormation, Ansible)
• Excellent understanding of SRE, Observability - Grafana, Prometheus, OTel
• Excellent Problem Management
• Excellent Mentoring and coaching other engineers

Desirable:

• Expert level Configuration Management
• Expert level Application Security
• Demonstrate your excellent expert level knowledge of TCP/IP Networking
