The Senior Director, EU External R&D Alliance Lead is a member of the External R&D and Innovation Team. This role is part of a concerted global effort to enhance and optimize the company’s collaborative efforts in Oncology both within and outside the company.

The Senior Director, EU Alliance lead will support in defining and leading EU External R&D strategy, with specific responsibilities in implementing tailored academic engagement plans in EU. This will include building and supporting Regional Academic Ecosystems to support Oncology strategy.

The Senior Director, EU Alliance lead will utilize their experience and extensive expertise in oncology to promote effective cross-functional work between the main internal stakeholders in the Hematology/Oncology R&D Global organization, to optimally engage external scientific partners, to expand academic scientific collaborations, and improve alliance management.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

The principal responsibilities of this appointment will include the following:

  • Closely collaborate with the VP of External R&D and Innovation and the broader team to liaise with key ORD stakeholders for external research collaborations for Oncology/Hematology.

  • Lead cross-functional work within Oncology R&D teams to clearly identify the scientific opportunities and unmet needs for which the company will benefit from external scientific expertise.

  • Lead portfolio review of partnerships in Hematology/Oncology R&D organization in EU.

  • Drive fit-for-purpose Alliance models (Network, consortia, individual agreements) with academic institutions in EU and ensure AZ is maximizing each Alliance to generate strategic opportunities.

  • Develop and execute the strategies and tactics for external scientific collaborations in EU with key external academic partners.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with investigators at key academic institutions in EU to ensure optimal collaboration and to achieve the highest level of results.

  • Lead collaboration with local R&D and local marketing company to ensure proper alignment in the external engagement strategies and joint actions.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of AZ pipeline, strategy and vision.

  • Coordinate and lead the review of study concepts/proposals received from external experts and contribute to deliver final research programs on specific areas of interest by working closely with external collaborators and internal cross-functional teams.

  • Monitor study and collaboration progress, all in accordance with AstraZeneca's requirements and standards.

  • Maintain compliance with all company compliance and regulatory guidelines governing external interactions.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Advanced degree, PhD and or MD with 10 years´ experience in pharmaceutical industry and extensive knowledge of Hematology/Oncology drug development

  • Evidence of working in cross-functional teams and working in a matrix organization with demonstrated ability to influence focusing on good communication,

  • Passion for establishing impactful relationships, working collaboratively and demonstrated ability to influence.

  • Strong scientific knowledge. Experience of authoring scientific documents and technical and disease area knowledge to be able to interact with confidence with internal and external partners.

  • Experience in academic partnership excellence; experience building, maintaining and closing external collaborations

  • Negotiation skills and ability to work with others inside and outside AstraZeneca

  • Ability to manage and/or resolve issues, risks, and conflicts both internally and externally in a timely manner through great listening skills and the capability to ask the right questions. Solution-oriented mindset.

  • Strong interpersonal skills. Proven display of soft skills and excellent communication skills.

  • Dynamic, team oriented, able to partner well with all functional management.

  • Strong analytical, oral and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated strong project management and cross-functional team management skills

  • Ability to travel internationally.
