Why this role matters

The Salvation Army Melbourne Project 614 program consists of a team of staff and volunteers based in the City of Melbourne, who are passionate about working with those who live on the fringes of society to address issues of homelessness or risks related to homelessness, mental health issues, addiction or social poverty. Connecting with hundreds of people each day, the program works to achieve positive outcomes for clients.

The Twilight Cafe's primary purpose is about building relationships and addressing social inclusion. The Cafe sees a range of different people accessing the service, including people who suffer from drug and alcohol addictions, mental health and general health issues, homelessness, living in boarding houses and rooming houses, asylum seekers and even international students. The Café is open to everyone over the age of 18 and is there to provide support and a sense of community to anyone in need.

About the role

We are seeking a values-driven and proactive Twilight Cafe Support Worker to provide front of house assistance to Cafe attendees.

Reporting to the Twilight Café Coordinator, this is a fixed-term (until June 2025), part-time position (10 hours per week,Wednesday and Thursday 3pm-8pm) based in Melbourne,VIC.Salary and conditions are in accordance with the SCHADS Award Level 2.

You will successfully

  • Engage with people in a non-threatening and empathetic manner to engage them in activities provided by Project 614.
  • Manage client behaviour effectively and appropriately to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all attendees.
  • Ensure detailed assessments are completed where appropriate, with referrals to internal and external services recorded.
  • Coordinate set-up ensuring meals/beverages are served and presented in a professional and timely manner.
  • Provide day to day support for volunteer activities, relaying performance feedback to the Melbourne Project 614 Volunteer & Engagement Coordinator.

You will have

  • A tertiary qualification in community services/social work and/or related disciplines is desirable.
  • A current and valid employee Victorian Working with Children Check is required.
  • Experience within community services is desirable.
