Job Description:

A postdoctoral research position in molecular virology, molecular pathology and disease diagnostics is available in the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU Vet Med). The overall scope of the work includes but is not limited to reverse genetics of RNA viruses (specifically rotavirus and coronavirus), development and characterization of vectored vaccine platforms for animal rotaviruses both in vitro and in vivo, pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2 in cell systems and rodent models, molecular biology of arteriviruses (EAV and PRRSV), and development of diagnostic tools for viral diseases. The successful applicant will be involved in a wide array of studies with access to a biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory space.

Job Responsibilities:

80% - The applicant will be involved in various research projects encompassing reverse gentics systems for RNA viruses (particularly rotaviruses and coronaviruses), development and characterization of vectored vaccine platforms for animal rotaviruses, pathogenesis of SARS-CoV-2, molecular biology of arteriviruses (EAV and PRRSV), and development of molecular diagnostic tools for viral diseases. The projects will involve both in vitro and in vivo studies (using rodent models and horses), and bioinformatic analysis of data. The in vivo studies require processing of clinical and necropsy specimens in a timely and efficient manner. The incumbent is required to work in a BSL-3 and ABSL-3 laboratory conducting in vitro and in vivo experiments specifically on SARS-CoV-2. There is ample opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team having expertise in the areas of cellular and molecular pathology, genomics and transcriptomics, molecular virology and viral pathogenesis.

15% - The incumbent is required to timely analyze data, properly store and manage generated data, write manuscripts to be published in peer reviewed journals, prepare scientific abstracts to present at scientific meetings, and contribute to grant applications developed by the PI.

5% - The candidate will also contribute to maintain the work environment in the laboratory by complying with all biosafety training and policies, and overall organization of the laboratory including ordering supplies for experiments, maintaining inventories and monitoring laboratory equipment. The incumbent will perform other duties as instructed by the PI, and contribute to the training of other graduate, veterinary or undergraduate students in the PI's laboratory.

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in Virology, Microbiology, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

DVM, BVSc, MV, VMD or equivalent degree with 2-3 years experience working with viral pathogens and cell culture.

Specific experience - Background in bioinformatics, microbiology, molecular and cell biology and evidence of scientific achievement including a good publication record. Training and experience in tissue culture, basic virology techniques, virus isolation, protein expression and purification, real-time PCR, immunoassays and flow cytometry is highly desirable.

Special and Physical Qualifications:

Required to be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing, sitting, walking, bending, reaching above the shoulder, reaching below the shoulder, vision near sight, vision far sight, twisting, pushing/pulling, and squatting.
