Your team:

Macmillan Children’s Books (MCB) is one of the UK’s leading children’s publishers, creating and publishing bestselling brands, children’s books and poetry for all ages for over 150 years. You will be joining MCB’s Fiction, Non-Fiction and Picture Books division.

Your role:
As one of our Editorial Directors, you will be a key player in looking after MCB’s picture book list. You will be pivotal in nurturing new and established editorial and illustrative talent and contributing to the overall growth and profitability of MCB. This is a 12-month fixed-term maternity cover.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Oversee P&L, driving revenue and profitability through key publishing events and the acquisition of new, marketable picture book authors and illustrators
  • Manage the publication strategy for an impactful author-and-illustrator-led picture book list, ensuring key titles are launched to capture target retail moments and cultural trends effectively
  • Continually reinvent the backlist creatively while managing costs, schedules and contracts efficiently to deliver quality titles on budget and on time
  • Collaborate closely with sales, international rights and communication teams to promote efficient, profitable publications across all formats, including audio and ebooks
  • Serve as an ambassador for MCB, lifting our reputation in the world of picture books and attending relevant events to create publishing opportunities.

Essential experience, abilities and knowledge you’ll need to succeed:

  • Significant experience in the children’s publishing industry

  • Demonstrable list-building skills

  • Strong drive and capability to be creatively exciting and commercially successful

  • Well connected with agents, authors, other content providers and influencers

  • Skills and experience working with established authors and illustrators

  • Experience of nurturing new and rising talent

  • Established and experienced in the world of picture books publishing.

This is a 12-month fixed-term role, and will be based in our offices in Farringdon, London, with some flexibility to work from home each week.
