The position of Investigator, Consumer Protection is a new position in the Law Department’s Affirmative & Special Litigation Unit. The person selected for this position will be responsible for conducting investigations into potential violations of the City’s recently passed Consumer Protection Ordinance, Bill No. 24011800. This position presents an exciting and unique opportunity to use a new legal tool that allows the City to protect its residents from scams and fraud through civil enforcement actions. Familiarity or experience with consumer protection and similar laws is preferred but not required.

The Investigator, Consumer Protection position requires critical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to process complex facts and circumstances.

All Unit members are expected to work collaboratively with other Unit and Law Department colleagues on all matters in a manner that reflects the Law Department’s focus on fostering and maintaining a collegial, inclusive, and professional environment that values all forms of diversity.

Essential Functions

In addition to the Position Summary, responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Determining the priority/scope of investigations.
  • Conducting factual research related to potential violations of the City’s Consumer Protection Ordinance.
  • Interviewing witnesses to obtain information, evidence and admissions or leads.
  • Evaluating information to determine credibility and reliability.
  • Preparing detailed draft and final reports of investigations setting forth allegations, findings, evidence and recommendations.
  • Participating in meetings with clients, stakeholders, and opposing counsel.
  • Appearing in court and at administrative proceedings as a government witness to present testimony and evidence.
  • Fostering and maintaining a collegial, inclusive, and professional environment that values all forms of diversity.

  • Knowledge of investigative and interviewing methods and techniques.
  • Ability to efficiently handle multiple cases and projects, uses resources effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to analyze large amounts of information, determine relevant facts, and propose viable solutions.
  • Ability to use rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems, probe all fruitful sources for answers, see hidden problems, and provide excellent analysis.

Requirements

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree program at an accredited college or university
  • Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant investigations experience.
