Position Summary

Reporting to the Fleet Manager, the Driver will be responsible for transporting a range of passengers from our health clients, college students, and potentially managing a school bus route and assisting with seasonal field trips. The Driver will possess a strong commitment to safety, excellent driving skills, and exceptional customer service.

What you’ll do

Patient Travel:

  • Ensure safe, timely transit for medical patients.
  • Patient assistance, including but not limited to wheelchair support and paperwork management.
  • Transporting patients to and from medical facilities safely and efficiently
  • Assisting patients in and out of vehicles, ensuring their comfort and safety
  • Responding to emergency situations calmly and efficiently
  • Always maintaining patient confidentiality and privacy
  • Ensure that only registered patients, clients, and Elders on the predetermined attendance list aboard the vehicle.
  • Responsible for regulating heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for the comfort of the passengers.

Driving/Vehicle Maintenance

  • Ensure the car seats are clean and comfortable for all riders.
  • Inspect the delivery vehicle regularly and report any issues.
  • Listen to traffic and weather reports to stay up to date on road conditions.
  • Keeping accurate records of each transportation, including destination and time
  • Performing routine vehicle maintenance and keeping the vehicle clean and presentable
  • Following all traffic laws and regulations while driving
  • Ensure daily and weekly cleaning procedures are met included but not limited to.
  • Daily disposal of all garbage, wiping surfaces, etc.
  • Weekly; outside power wash and inside dusting, vacuuming, etc.
  • Keep copies of all pre/post-trip reports, mileage logs, etc.
  • Responsible for maintaining safety standards. This includes boarding and exiting procedures.
  • Complete fueling and top of fluids as required.

Other Duties

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.

  • Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Manager, Director, Executive Director/Chief Administrative Officer, or Chief & Council.

What you bring

Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

  • A valid Class 2, 3 or 4 (restricted or unrestricted) BC Driver’s License strongly preferred. Applicants with a class 5 drivers' license will still be considered. Must have a safe driving record for the last 5 years (Driver’s abstract to be submitted with no more than 6 demerit points issued in the last 5-year period).

  • Time management skills to ensure timely pick-ups and drop-offs.

  • Ability to remain calm in stressful driving situations.

  • Basic maintenance knowledge to fix any simple mechanical problems that may occur unexpectedly while on the road.

  • Be attentive and alert in case unexpected hazards are found on the road.

  • Standard First Aid and CPR Certificate considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of Vehicle equipment maintenance is considered an asset. Ability to clean equipment according to identified standards and procedures.

Preferred

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Lived experience as a member of an Indigenous community, or with knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.

  • Experience working with First Nations communities, young workers, and adults.

  • Prior wildfire experience and construction/renovation experience an asset.

  • Ability and willingness to learn online and in person platforms.

  • Ability and willingness to navigate Fire Smart website and Fire Smart requirements.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills.

  • Proficient computer skills with the Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams).

Cultural Competency

  • Understanding of, or willingness to learn about, First Nations cultures, traditions, and contemporary issues affecting First Nations people.

  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.

  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.

Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and perform both fieldwork and office work.
  • Initial employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.

All background checks, reference checks and criminal record checks are performed in accordance with Seabird Island Human Resources Policy Manual, protecting the integrity and confidentiality of information gathered during the evaluation.
