Digital Hardware Engineer

Mission:

Thales Belgium Hardware Products Department – Competence center – is responsible for R&D activities related to radios HF band (1.5 to 30 MHz) equipment as well as aeronautical and tactical vehicle calculators and communication devices that contribute to the Thales Group portfolio. As such, this Department leads the work for architecture, research and development, integration, validation, qualification and industrialization of Thales HF tactical products.

In this context, the Digital Hardware Engineer will take on the responsibility of designing and developing digital circuits in various domains such as cryptography, radio, power control and signal processing.

Main Responsibilities:

• You will be responsible for new product development tasks, including breadboarding, circuit simulation, electronic test procedure documentation, and lab guidance of product testing.
• You will be responsible for the design and development of digital products from concept to production. This includes analysis of customer specifications, sub-system and detailed design. As such you will create analog and digital circuits, ensuring signal integrity and optimal performance.
• Your field of activities will be centered on digital electronic systems design, ranging from simple embedded microcontrollers to high-end FPGA based systems.
• You’ll define the PCB schematics and guide the layout engineer, validate prototypes, perform design integration and qualification, and follow up the design into production.
• You will be responsible to make and follow call proposal (For projects for “La Region Wallonne”, European projects and etc..).
• You will be responsible for qualifying products according to high level international standards. You will also ensure the electronic designs meet industry standards and regulatory compliance.
• You’ll work in close collaboration with the Mechanics, Layout, Component, Embedded Software and FPGA design engineers.
• You will report to the Head of Department, Hardware.

Profile:

Required level of studies and experience

• Master’s Degree in engineering with a specialty in electronics, telecommunication or equivalent.
• Practical experience with electronic board design, analogue and digital techniques. Experience with FPGA’s and embedded software is an asset.

Knowledge and skills

• You have an analytical mindset and are able to decompose system level requirements into component level specifications.
• Analyzing customer needs and determining the requirements, capacity, and cost for developing products is easy for you.
• Design, develop, analyze, and test new and existing electrical products to specifications provided by the customer and marketing interest you.
• You’re passionate about technology.
• You’re willing to learn new technologies.
• Design digital hardware that can be used with either analog, digital, or mixed-signal technology.
• Knowledge of boundary scan testing is an asset.
• Knowledge about reliability and design robustness analysis, such as MTBF and MTTF calculations, Worst case, Part stress, Failure Mode analysis, is an advantage.
• Knowledge about Signal Integrity is strong plus.
• Strong problem solving, debug and failure analysis skills with a solid understanding of core engineering principles.
• Hands-on laboratory work including using oscilloscope, network analyzers, spectrum analyzers and other test equipments.
• Strong communication skills are required, including the ability to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms across different management levels.
• Ability to work in team. Taste for international contacts. Manifest the flexibility needed to be integrated in the different stages of a project.
• Good knowledge of English is required. In addition, the candidate should preferably be fluent in French and/or Dutch.
